iPhone 101: Will jailbreak unlock my iPhone?

You've heard about the one-touch jailbreak exploit. You think it's something you might want to try, but then you worry: what about iBricks? Will the jailbreak unlock my phone? Fear not. Jailbreaking reassigns the root of the iPhone's file tree. It in no way affects your iPhone's telephony functions or baseband/modem areas. Once jailbroken, you can run any of the unlocking applications but jailbreaking itself has nothing to do with unlocking. If you want to un-jailbreak, just restore your phone. It will not affect your upgrade path the way the older unlocks did.

And what about iPod touches? Will the next firmware upgrade turn it into a brick? Almost certainly not. And if you're worried, just restore your touch to a pristine state before you upgrade.

Thanks to everyone who wrote in to ask.

hey, it occured to me that this new hack allows anyone to hack any Ipod touch or Iphone! So, if you live in close proximity to an Apple store, guess what you can do! Go into the Apple store and jailbreak all the ipods. Imagine the Geniuses' faces when they see all their ipods jailbroken, without ever having left the store! Esp. the largest stores like on 5th Ave.

So, if I jailbreak a 1.1.1 iPhone and then run anySIM on it, will restoring it to jail it again re-lock the phone?

Whew! I was beginning to worry that all this actual Mac news about Leopard would threaten this iPhone blog.

Fear not! Three posts in 45 minutes by the same author, covering mostly the same stuff, and we're back on track!

What is the status of safely being able to update a 1.0.2 unlocked phone to 1.1.1? Is there any tool that does this?

Are there any free unlocking apps that can be run via mobile Safari?

I hate the idea of the iPhone being locked too but, I think we should be patient and allow Apple to do this on their own. Another solution would be for millions of cellphone consumers to launch a class action lawsuit against the entire wireless industry to get rid of phone locking. I would something like that in a heartbeat.

I've noticed that some sounds have stopped functioning through the loudspeaker since I jailbroke my iPhone. For instance, it no longer makes the lock/unclock sound, the camera shutter, nor any iPod audio.

Of course, I've also installed several apps, so it very well could be one of those.

Anyone else experience this?

This is a good one, there are a ton of folks out there confused about this.

On a side note, I wondered how long it would be until the flood of iPhone/iPod touch articles would resume :-p
