I saw a job posting on craigslist last week that was a recruiter looking for Apple Customer Service reps in Vancouver in a hurry.
I dunno. I think the iPhone in Canada may not be far off. I still won't get it though. I have the iPod touch and a RAZR with Telus (1.5 years remaining in 3 year contract.) If Rogers has reasonable data plans in 1.5 years, I'll think about it. Maybe the Newton Touch will have a phone built in by then.
So, if you were to unlock the iPhone in Canada, wouldn't you be stuck with Rogers (or Fido which is Rogers junior but worse) anyway? Wouldn't you then not be screwing Rogers over but rather just getting an iPhone and paying them for the service. Rogers and Fido are the only GSM offering phone services here right?
November 06 2007 at 12:03 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyThere was a great narrative about this on the radio in Vancouver about a week ago - they said it doesn't matter WHEN the iPhone comes to Canada because it will cost users between $250 and $850 PER MONTH for similar data usage that Americans get for around $40-$80 per month.
It's rape, pure and simple.
I canceled the data plan on my WindowsMobile phone because even for simple email use it was costing waaaaaay too much, forget browsing the web or chatting.
When I asked a Rogers CS representative why our rates are so high as compared to US data plans, he informed me it's because Rogers is leasing the technology from the US companies - they don't actually own the rights to stream data. I don't think he quite knew what he was talking about but either way, Canadians still get hosed, eh?
@17: Since when were we proud? This is news to me. As far as I know, we're still just an unofficial part of the United States.
As for on-topic stuff...hehe, Erica, you'd make a lousy songwriter but I still love ya for writing the post that way. :) I'm not all that eager to see Rogers screw me over any harder than they currently want to, so I would never even consider using an iPhone with them. If Apple releases more varied iPhones in the future...maybe, but by then I'll have enjoyed my iPod touch as a kickass PDA long enough that having to carry around an additional cell phone will seem just as trivial as it does now.
@18
You must not be canadian.

Whoa whoa whoa, what's with all the Canada hating?
Yes - go to the USA, buy iPhone, bring it home to canada.
Unlock it yourself - its easy with modmyifone.com, and enjoy.
disable EDGE - there are plenty of wifi hotspots around for free.
oh and F*CK Rogers, who have presumably bribed someone at the CRTC to allow them their nasty monopoly in Canada.
Is canada a real country? Well, not really - kind of like the UK in the fifties at times, with a slice of that other phony country, the US, thrown in....
Very straitlaced, way too much Xtianity, very little adventure, lot of 'proud to be canadian' nonsense.
Typical stupid country, to be honest.
Flag waving and corporate suits and a kind of stasis - way too much fear.
Oh and the stupid ice hockey thing - its all a bit brainwashed, but its quiet here.
As I said over on Engadget.
1.Go to buffalo
2.Unlock it yourself at home.
3.Don't buy iPhones off craigslist.
I have one, my girlfriend, 2 of my best mates, and I see at least one iPhone everyday.
Don't wait on Rogers.
They are money hunfry maniacs. Bastards, Douchebags, Mother F**KERs of all sortS!!!
Phewph.. woah.. I'm sorry.. I needed to get that one out of my system.
Actually
1.00 CAD = 1.07232 USD , hehe go Canada :)
