iPhone UK: The Liveblog

Thankfully, the queue is now starting to gain more people, albeit slowly, and with no rain (unlike yesterday's downpours) predicted, we're getting started on some more hot drinks to hopefully raise body temperatures close to normal.
0710: Phil Schiller, Senior Vice President, Worldwide Product Marketing has just rolled up:

1530: With the Apple Store closed, the queue is slowly beginning to grow: the press have left, at least for now, and if you're still wanting an Apple-fix don't worry: the store staff appear to be selling small portable goods via their EasyPay handsets.

Greetings TUAW readers, from our temporary HQ located just outside London's Regent Street store. Yes, that's right: we're live from London...

Be careful using the iPhone for data downloads when abroad: I downloaded 16.5Mb while in the USA and was startled to find that it cost almost £100 because it calls back to the UK each time. Difficult because so many iPhone functions depend on the web.
If you can't use WiFi, stick to voice and SMS while abroad. Avoid maps, weather etc!

Well I just got home from the Bullring Birmingham Apple Store, was quite a large queue, I was 17th and there were lots of tuaw.com readers with Macs. Great atmosphere, actually quite enjoyed sitting in line. Was served quickly and the staff had got a great queue/serving system going on.
Am all set up, just charging it now! So excited, its like being 9 again!
wow, so much for the liveblog, eh? its been almost 2 hours since they went on sale, and no updates since 3:30 local time? boo.

I popped into the Carphone Warehouse in Brixton at 7PM there was hardly any action going on in the store, the people who work there were actually shoving iphones into peoples faces due to lack of frenzy.
I got to Carphone Warehouse in Maidenhead at 5:57pm. I was fifth in line. After serving one customer, their chip and pin system crashed.
They got another few customers served over the next 20 mins or so and then I stuck around for another 30 mins whilst they tried to serve me.. I eventually gave up at 6:50pm.
So, I walked around the corner to the O2 store which was full of staff but no customers and bought my iPhone which took all of 2 minutes.
Carphone Warehouse = shambles
So Nik,
Are you in iPhone goodness land yet?
Just got back from the Apple Store in the Arndale Centre, Manchester. When I was there (5-ish), there were about 10 people queuing which, to be honest, was somewhat pathetic. The Arndale Centre provided the Apple Store with yards and yards of barrier rope, but they ended up piling those on the side because no one bothered to turn up!
I didn't either, I walked past. Carphone Warehouse, on the other than, stayed open quite late and had customers milling about before 6pm.
heh, nice shot of Schiller!
