Willkomen in Deutschland, iPhone
While poor Nik finishes a restless, cold night in Regent Street, the first European iPhones are already in the hands of eager customers in Köln (Cologne), Germany. Macnotes.de has the pictures and the story from the single-store T-Mobile midnight madness launch; online sales in Germany also commenced at midnight, and retail sales across the rest of the country are scheduled for later today. One bonus for the crowd (estimated at 300 or more) of shoppers at the introduction in Köln -- free pretzels from T-Mobile. Yum!You can see a reasonable Google translation of the Macnotes page here.

a) It's: "Wilkommen in Deutschland"
b) That's a Belgium Flag!!! LoL The German one is black, red, yellow top to bottom not left to right...
Ignorant Americans... ;-) j/k

Bitte berichtigen Sie Ihr Deutsch nicht, fuer einen "native englishspeaker" ist es sehr gut. :)
Thanks again. And Hi from frosty Saskatoon, SK!
And by the way, it IS the german flag. The Belgium flag is Black, Yellow, Red on it's side. When a German flag is to be hung horizontally, that is the correct representation. :)

Why is the iPhone late in Europe?
Because the americans are still not able to get the flags and german text right. Apple is not alone there ;-).

Just to let you know: This is NOT the belgium flag (see here: http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Belgien) , it is the german flag but shown vertically, not (as it should be) horizontally. Micheal Rose's German is one of the best I have ever read by a none native speaker, I wish my English would be half as good. Of course, there are mistakes, but this is quite natural as German is one of the hardest languages to learn (besides Japanese of course :) ) Those cases, articles ans whatever kill you.
Und Phillip: Wo kamst Du gleich nochmal her? Amerika? Mich wundert offengestanden, daß Dein Deutsch so akzentfrei ist, bei all Deiner Ignoranz...

Michael, you put a GRAND SMILE in my face with this article!
I'm an editor of one of the largest German's Mac Portals, mactechnews.de, and we're happy to join the iPhone Madness in the US!
Your German's great! ;-) Despite some mistakes, keep up the good
work.
All the best from Munich, Germany,
Björn

@kiwi66...that was funny.
Would someone post those flags so we can see the difference?
Might as well for clarification instead of bickering back and forth so we can go back to the subject matter: Wikomen in Germany...(that was intentional) but you got my point?

So, 1575 euros for the iPhone and the cheapest two year plan option. That's over 2300 dollars (1150 a year). These prices are uncommon for Europe.
Sure, die-hard fans will get one, but I'm really curious what the tally will be at years end.

By the way, is the price with 399,- EUR with every charge?
And our flag is with black, red, GOLD not yellow... ;)

Great side, nice idea, as a true apple fan (or should I say believer :-P) I am happy to see that we (Germany) are (is) now one step ahead in the international Apple community.
Your German is great! There is no reason for your German teacher to use a book other than reading in it. Thank you for honoring us, by using German!!!!!
The flag is 100% correct too.
P.S. I will not buy an iPhone ... YET ;-)
Next year I have to renew my T-mobile service plan anyway and hopefully T-Mobile will be offering a more attractive plan for me.
Anyhow: Allen neuen iPhone Nutzern meinen herzlichen Glückwunsch!

So can anyone tell us what happens when you grab a German iphone and try to put an US tmobile sim card? does it just tell you you have the wrong sim?
or better yet can you guys answer how it is that you decided that it was cool to fuse words together and come up with super long ones like:
Rolltreppenbenutzungshinweise
Rindfleischetikettierungsüberwachungsaufgabenübertragungsgesetz
or why is it that Germans "make fun" instead of have fun?

Well the Frenchs feels cheated (I know I do :) ) but at the same time I had to subscribe a new contract last month, so unless the iPhone is sold for a reasonable price in its unlocked form, I'll pass and continue playing with my iTouch.

The nice thing about T-mobile's simlock system is that yes, you can pop in a T-Mobile card from any country and it will work in any T-Mobile phone. However, if activation is still present, you will have to get around that (at least the no-activation hack doesn't bork around with the baseband radio... right?)

that's because German is a synthetic language whereas English tends to be analytic ;)
Anyhow, paired with the comments one of the funniest articles on TUAW recently, nice to see that the Mac community is so international.
Regarding the german iPhone, I believe it to be immensely overpriced and thus not being able to ignite a real "internet everywhere" revolution. May be I'll get me one in a few years, when I don't have to use Telekom.

What's wrong with Telekom? Unlike AT&T, Sprint and Verizon (especially Sprint), their customer service people are actually *supportive* of the customer (helped me out a bunch, no matter what the problem).
