iTunes 7.5 and iPhone 1.1.2 return custom ringtones

For reasons I do not begin to understand, the combination of iTunes 7.5 and the 1.1.2 iPhone once again allow you to add custom ringtones without fussing with property lists and special software. Take any m4a file, thirty-seconds or less (although some report success with tracks up to 40 seconds), rename it to m4r and double-click to add it to iTunes. The file appears in your ringtones and can be synched--I tested this out myself--to your iPhone.
So has Apple relented? Or is this a momentary lapse of oversight? Only time will tell.
Thanks to Dave P

Edit: Never mind... Had to create a "ringtones" folder within my iTunes music folder and then import it via that... My iPhone is now rockin to "Freelove Freeway" by David Brent whenever someone rings me! Ace!

ok, i have 7.5 and 1.1.2
a 30 sec clip in itunes library (mp3), convert it to acc (.m4a), change extension to .m4r, the icon changes to Ring and also the info insides itunes shows ringtone, at this point the file is in its folder
there is no folder called Ringtones inside Itunes music folder
i created it myself in finder
but at this point no ringtone shows at the ringtone tab when iphone is synced
any suggestions...

Last night I finished iRing.... It renames all of your m4a ringtones to m4r. Saves a lot of time.

Does iToner still work with 1.1.2?

There is no need for iToner now that you can add you own ringtones. iRing is free and shortens the custom ringtone process.

you can also export a let's say mp3 file in quick time to mp4 and rename that mp4 to m4r :)

Works on a UK iPhone. The thing is that if you convert a file to AAC in itunes, to remove it from iTunes. Then rename the file extension. Then import it. It will then be added to your ringtones.
I find it amusing that this is the only way I can put ringtones on my iPhone, as the iTunes ringtone creator thing is throwing up an error about a network connection. Hah.

Nice info Andy but it didn't work for me. So i thought maybe i have to rename the file as well... and it works!
so:
1) import mp3 into itunes
2) change to AAC
3) reveal file in finder
4) delete mp3 and m4a from itunes
5) rename tune.m4a to anothertunename.mr4
6) double-click

After the 1.1.1. debacle, I have stubbornly stuck with iTunes 7.4.1 and gone BACK to iPhone 1.0.2 so that I may continue with the old-fashioned but effective MakeiPhoneRingtone. Do I dare mess with success and install these updates?

1.1.2 appears to still be the official version being put out by iTunes. You can manually grab the file and install it, but I'm fine waiting.
Why such a negative take? "For reasons I do not begin to understand"?

GT,
In my opinion, No. If you've already got something that works, then why risk it not working? People have avoided hacks for the same reason that you've avoided upgrading (for fear something might not work as you want it to). If you upgrade and something DOESN'T work right, you may be able to re-install 1.0.2, but why chance it when what you have works perfectly fine?

I'm running iTunes 7.5, so why is it telling me that I'm running the most current version of the iPhone software (1.1.1)? It's not showing me 1.1.2!

I tried doing this with 1.1.1 and iTunes 7.5 hoping it would work. It seems I can add the ringtone to iTunes, but when it syncs with the iPhone it says the file can not be played on the iPhone. Not making the jump to 1.1.2 just to get that working although it would be nice.
