NCIS features an oddly full-featured iPhone

People on TV really are different from you and me. Already we know that with the power of bionic hearing, they can use their iPhones upside-down; now apparently they've got special iPhones with mil-spec video capabilities as well. Evidence: last week's "Designated Target" episode of CBS's NCIS. You can watch for yourself on CBS's innerTube player or purchase the episode in iTunes.

Shortly after the opening credits, as the team analyzes the brutal dual murder of a Pentagon official and a cabdriver, one of the NCIS agents (Sean Murray's "Tim McGee") analyzes the video captured from the cab's onboard camera -- by plugging the camera into his iPhone with what appears to be a combination RJ-45/iPod docking cable. Lo and behold, this frankencable allows the iPhone to display the cab video in strikingly high-res black and white. Perhaps Erica has been consulting for the Pentagon?

If you see further examples of such blatant iPhone abuse, by all means send them in.

Thanks Heidi

Fake Steve really isn't trying to keep stupid people from using iPhones.

I agree with a previous comment - McGee is a true hacker, and would have unlocked his iPhone and customized it. If Abbey had one, she'd do the same thing.

Face it - Crime shows are essentially science fiction. Not that there's anything wrong with that, but adding this capacity to an iPhone is nothing compared to some of the magical feats they accomplish with their technology. They stop barely short of walking around with Star Trek-style tricorders.

I have no problem with Science Fiction, I enjoy it myself; I'm just saying that most crime dramas fit the sci-fi genre by solving problems using futuristic technology, or adding futuristic capabilities to existing technology. It's time for all the crime drama fans to stop fooling themselves, admit they're sci-fi fans, and start attending conventions! :-)

(I'm kidding about the conventions)

And if you notice, the WiFi shows full strength. Honestly, that was the most unbelievable part to me when I watched it. I WISH we had full WiFi in all parks here in DC. ;)

You missed the previous episode where he hooked the video from the taxi cab into his iphone and the watched the playback of the tape.

Also there was another show where he used the iphone but the screen never went black when next to his face. Yo could see the glow.

The fun thing is that there's no reason the iPhone shouldn't be able to do any of these things... maybe the shows take place 5 months in the future ;)
