AT&T's Stephenson: 3G iPhone
The iPhone has been a big financial win for Apple. So, as pretty much everyone and their brother expected, Apple will follow up the current EDGE version with a true 3G iPhone in 2008: "later next year", according to Jobs back in September. Today, AT&T's CEO Randall Stephenson confirmed a 2008 ship date.
Apple's dedication to evolving the iPhone product line may indicate further development of non-phone platforms including the touch line and, perhaps, a larger tablet computer. Apple is not alone in exploring the wireless tablet market. Amazon recently introduced the Kindle e-reader, which sells for about the same price as an iPhone and offers fee-free (albeit limited) wireless browsing. (It also has a crappy 256 MB onboard, so if you want to talk about evolutionary dead ends, the Kindle may not survive rekindling.)
Thanks everyone who sent this in.

How much bigger wll the 3G iPhone be, will it still have WiFi?
December 01 2007 at 11:16 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyWhy are we acting like this was a secret in the first place? Isn't it widely talked about that they will deliver a 3G as soon as they can resolve the power issue? Did anyone really think it would take them till 2009, especially with the completion of that new Broadcom chip that does 3G?

So while the next iPhone can have 3G, GPS or whatever else that fans think it should have, so do other phones competing when iPhone version 2 comes out. As it stands there are already many phones out there that have more functionality than the iPhone. Many of the manufacturers have been at it for years longer than Apple and sure they can deliver better products if they feel they have a serious competitor. HTC phones are already fantastic and as mobile internet devices go, we haven't even scratched the surface.
All in all, whether iPhone or others, as long at they deliver ever better products we consumers will benefit as a result.

it seems that the iPhone hype craze has run its 5 month craze and has levelled at last. The only news you'll get about it are in EU countries launching it (yawn, already got it from the US) and it seems it is slowly disappearing in the sea of mobile phones as its competitors are preparing their own answers. Ipods were alone back then, the market was not mature and it was easy to capture a huge share. IMO iPhone v.2 won't even come close to the success of v.1.
November 30 2007 at 4:23 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyOn other phones I've used 3G and I still prefer Wifi, it's more reliable. Also, they will need to solve the battery issue. I've used a Samsung Blackjack and an HTC with 3G and it will suck the battery dry in hours.
I'd rather have a Tmobile-Wifi-calling-like option the iPhone; I would finally be able to make/receive calls at our weekend house.
No one saw that one coming, really! My main question is, will it still have WiFi? Anyway, great job Apple.

November 29 2007 at 6:47 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyYeah, I'm not sure what the Kindle jab was all about. It really has nothing to do with the iPhone in any stretch of the imagination. Either Erica doesn't know what a Kindle is or just likes to increase the comment count.
November 29 2007 at 4:55 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI'm pretty sure the iPhone itself isn't even half of what it is supposed to become. I'm absolutely sure that they have
thrown this on to the market just because of the huge demand for it. But I'm thinking, way for about a year and you'll see what the iPhone was realy ment to be.......
well, I have - next to my iPhone which I use all the time - an HTC 3600 whcih is 3G ; my provider is full 3G ready and guess : the performance of the HTC on 3G is closer to the performance of my GPRS (not EDGE) on my iPhone, then my iPhone WIFI performance
I think Apple's choice to go for full WIFI coverage is definetly best in performance, and don't forget : FREE !!!
My point : everybody wants 3G, I doubt they will be that happy the day they have it in their hands (I'm not even considering the look on their faces when they will see their bills ....)
I have the AT&T Tilt (Kaiser) and find that I use 3G even more than wi-fi. There is a speed difference, especially when I have full wi-fi signal, but the 3G is fast enough that I often keep wi-fi off to save the battery and to avoid having to worry about turning it on and off every time I go in or out of range of my home and work networks. With an unlimited data plan, I find that I don't see wi-fi as such a huge feature.
