Pro Tools LE controlled with an iPhone
According to Create Digital Music an experienced Pro Tools developer named Alex le Lievre has managed to hack together a Pro Tools LE remote using his iPhone. As you can see from the above video the remote allows him to control Pro Tools and get live feedback from it on an iPhone or iPod touch. Alex is not releasing the software yet because he wants to sell it come February when the iPhone SDK is released "if Apple lets [him] once they certify [his] code." In any case, just getting this to work is rather impressive. There are more details at Create Digial Music.

This is so amazing. I saw this yesterday and can just see some incredible applications also for LIVE music and lighting, be it in a DJ/club setting or a big event....being able to control sound, mixing, tracks, lights, all from your phone walking around the venue.

With a builtin camera and microphone, there is a lot of potential for this sort of thing. Heck, you could even use the iphone as a quick and dirty playback device!

I like the additional thinking. It would be amazing to see this concept expand into other areas. I can't imagine how awesome it would be to run live sound/lighting from anywhere in the venue. Of course I'd have to get digital gear first, which isn't all that cheap.

dont expect audio out from this though.. unless theres a hack i dont know about, audio must be coming out from the digidesign interface (or m-audio if its pro tools m-powered)
..make it for logic/garageband, and apple would probably buy it

I think this is one of the main reasons why the iPhone won Time Magazines device of the year. I guess this would also work on the iPod Touch ?? Very nicely done.

It must be noted CDM didn't exactly verify this as real. Pro Tools aint too friendly when comes to this sort of thing... If it is real it'll be very impressive, but i'll believe it when i see it. I wants me the same thing fer logic automations... would be so useful.

It has been confirmed. The original article linked in the Digg (no the one in CDM, but the one in Gizmodo) has an interview with the author. The beta will be out next week. The server will work only for Mac at this point. He plans to release it commercially in February, hoping Apple will give it certification after the SDK launch. I'm buying it.
One more thing: what's this thing about not linking to Gizmodo in all the blogs owned by Weblogs? TUAW used to link to them in the past. Engadget never does. Not even when they have big exclusives. Yet, Gizmodo doesn't have any problem in linking to you.
It just makes a great blog like TUAW look petty and childish.

This is cool but not practical. I use Pro Tools a lot in my line of work and I see little reason to turn an iPhone into a control interface. Speaking of Pro Tools, when will we see support for Leopard?!! It's the one app holding me back.

The remote doesn't currently support controlling of plugins but in a future version it will when I can figure out that part of the HUI protocol.
There will be a public (free) beta available late next month and it should have some more surprises.

I would be willing to put a nice hefty donation down for anyone who could build a native iphone app that could perform real time analysis of live audio via the iphone mic and display the results along a 31 band graphic eq. This would be very useful when ringing the feedback out of monitors before a show. Obviously, for the application to work accurately, one would have to compensate for the frequency response of the iphone mic when RTAing. I don't even know if this is possible but I would love to see it! Who's with me?
