PSX emulator goes public, runs 3D on the iPhone surprisingly well
This is why I'm looking forward to 2008 more than anything else-- MacNN reports that psx4iphone, the Playstation (PS1 or PSX) emulator for the iPhone has now gone public. The files are available for download, and we're told that the emulator should be available on Installer.app soon (if not already-- this news dropped over the weekend).
There's no official word about playability (as you can tell from the video above, it is running, but not in a state where you could actually play it), but work is still being done. What this does tell us, fortunately, is that it's possible to run 3D on the iPhone. And as MacNN says, that means there are big things ahead when the official SDK drops in February. Of course, we still don't know what the dev kit will be made of (and who will get to use it), but if this is what can be done unofficially, I can't wait to see what will be done with an official SDK.

Apparently we have a very different idea of surprisingly well. I'm sure it will progress though.

Yeah, im afraid i agree with sys_ops911. That looks not only pants, but far too small to even think about playing it. People should be developing original iphone games based on the accelerometer's and touch capabilities NOT porting another crap sequel to a phone which just shouldn't have it.

I'm all for this. Do less graphic-intense games run more smoothly?
And while this is great and all, why did it take a matter of months to make this happen on the iphone, when OS X users have been sitting on a barely-working psx emulator for years?

newsflash fake ballmer, trying to ride the coat tails of fake steve jobs is really lame. maybe the concept of crappy rip offs is the point of your satire given your subject, but either way, your blog ain't gettin a hit from me.

I've made a tutorial on how to get this up and running on your iPhone if anyone is interested.

"I can't wait to see what will be done with an official SDK."
Many think the answer is "a lot less." Many devs I've spoken to think the Apple SDK is likely to be seriously crippled in the name of "security." Caveat emptor.

It's really impressive, yet disappointing at the same time. Impressive that I never thought I'd see Tekken up and running on an iPhone (great job by the devs.)
Yet it's disappointing at how slow it's running. Even with optimization, I wonder how fast this thing can actually ever get.
Realtime would be cool, who knows sooner or later there might be a dock-connected controller for all these emulators.

There's a PSX emulator for OS X? Stable?
Also, I want Vib Ribbon on my MBP via emulation. It would be cool on iPhone too, but tbh... there's FAR too much iPhone coverage on this site.
TUAW's New Year's Resolutions:
1. Get me Vib Ribbon on my Mac.
2. Stop the incessant iPhone blogging. Seriously.
Thank you !
