Wired puts Jailbroken iPhone on top 2007 gadget list

Christmas is almost upon us, and you know what that means! A deluge of 'Best of the Year' lists are soon going to be unleashed upon the web. Wired has gotten an early start and compiled a list of the Top 10 Gadgets of 2007, and the iPhone made the cut. Interestingly, though, Wired has listed a 'Jailbroken iPhone,' and not the default iPhone that Apple ships.

I have nothing against Jailbreaking iPhones, but I must admit that my iPhone was Jailbroken for less than an hour. I just couldn't find any apps that were compelling enough for me to have to worry about firmware updates and the like.

I am sure this won't be the last year end list that the iPhone will end up on.

To me the 3rd party apps are just a bonus, added to the much more important fact that I'm not bound to AT&T with a jailbroken iPhone. I just wish I could use it with VZW, damn CDMA!!

It's not so much the apps with Jailbreak, it's the look alterations. I love how you can change how it looks. Just look at my iPod Touch, I couldn't have asked for a better setup: http://www.berzerkerweb.com/pics/ipod/Home3.png

I have had my iPhone since day 1 and it's never wowed me, in fact the phone reception from ATT/ Cingular is so inferior here in Chicago compared to TMobile (which I had to pay to cancel) that I sometimes have to bite my tongue from swearing. Often it takes 5 to 10 minutes for this phone to get reception when I am outdoors on Rush Street or Michigan Avenue... What a gyp.

Maybe you should've waited a couple weeks and unlocked it to work with a known good entity like T-Mobile. I did exactly that and not only did I pay $200 less, but my phone reception is the same as with my last phone.

Iphysics was worth it alone for my ipod touch....lots of fun, the last couple of days has brought chess and backgammon and some good ebooks.
but for us touch owners the biggies were the iphone apps that we should have had in the first place.
I also am digging iflix....works great to order movies on netflix and keeping track of them.
I would rate mine as very stable right now, had some issues with customizer at first but that has been resolved.

If it wasn't for the iPhone and Jailbreaking, I don't think I would have ever ventured as far as I have on the other side of the computing fence.

There's nothing to a stock phone that really shows what the OS is capable of, and maybe I missed the mark but I thought it was SJ's intention to use the iPhone as the proverbial piece of Cheese to coax Windows users like myself to the Mac platform.

I've switched and love it without regret, and I can honestly say I would have never switched if all I had was a stock iPhone.

Yea I agree that OS X in the iPhone is incredibility stable--far more stable than WinMob or PalmOS. Those who cannot jailbreak without complaining about instability or "boredom" either can't follow directions or are easily swayed by the placebo effect. In any case it's laughable to me to state there is "nothing interesting" about current third-party apps when a bonestock iPhone is far more uninteresting. Wired agrees. I suspect the naysayers will go crazy over PacMan when it is available for the iPhone via iTunes. Ugh...

Anyway as stated previously the most unstable of all iPhone applications are from Apple themselves.

i have an unopened iPhone but I'm reluctant to open it as I understand it cannot be jailbroken. (Week 47 of production)

SSH alone (and labyrinth of course) would make it worth ripping open the shrink rap.

Does anyone have any idea if progress is being made jailbreaking the new ones?

No, all iPhones can be jailbroken and used for SSH, labyrinth and everything else.

Your week 47 phone can't be unlocked for use with a different carrier, that's all.

So get it out of the shrinkwrap and enjoy...

I have 40 apps on mine and its stable. Love the HP 15C calculator, PDF viewer. And believe me the yellow flashing light when I walk the dog at night has been great, Send pics gets used a lot as does, RSS feeds. Jailbreaking for me is a must. As Erica lists additional sources, I add them and the app selection list grows larger daily.

I live in Canada and am very happy with my jailbroken iPhone, my cellular plan was grandfathered before Fido was taken over by Rogers Wireless. Unlimited Data + Unlimited (5,000 minutes) a month local calling, 1,000 minutes long distance = $100.00/month
