You may recall that yesterday we posted a link to Gear Live's gallery of iPhone v1.1.3 snaps. In this season of rumors, we were trying to take it with a pinch of salt; we ended up with enough salt to make some Margaritas here at TUAW HQ, such was our skepticism -- and we were, it would seem, quite wrong to have doubted.Thankfully Gear Live's Andru Edwards & Nate True decided to show us all what we can expect, with a full-blown video of the latest firmware, embedded after the break (all 8 minutes of it) with their permission. There's a tonne of exciting stuff shown off -- saving of pins on Google Maps, cell-tower triangulation with a single click (sweet!) and the long-missed hybrid Google Map (my preferred view). Throw in the re-arranging of the home screen and multiple SMS recipients (something we'd quite like to use over the holiday period) -- my iPhone is feeling very inadequate already.
Thanks Andru!

First? Looks pretty sweet, and stuff like this definitely makes me want to not jailbreak my phone and just wait for the SDK...so close....

If you chance the carrier name and icon, they are not changed back after a software update. This also happens if you change it on 1.1.2 and then do a firmware restore.

Also I think its strange how in the beginning of the video his camera cannot focus on the small text on the about screen to show the version. But then in the walk through video itself it sure is but he conveniently does not show it. I call it a HOAX. I mean come on now you think AAPL would just let this guy get away with this type of information? Their lawyers would be all over his ass faster then you can say "thinksecret"!!!

I've just realised what's going on here.
Gearlive receive the update from an anonymous person just after xmas. I reckon that Apple have given them the update themselves to show the new features to the public. Why? To make the people who received an iPhone / Touch at Xmas think twice before jailbreaking it.
Genius.

I think you hit the nail on the head with that one.

Thinking about it some more, it also explains why there are no cease and desists from Apple and why gearlive are so happy flaunting this all over the net. In the wake of what happened to thinksecret, i don't think i would be so....obvious.

The only problem with that theory is this. Why wouldn't Apple release it themselves in one their "Guided Tours?" Surely if they did it it would still gain tons of attention.
Regardless, they got it somehow and it looks pretty legit. I can't wait, it's just one more sign of good things to come after the SDK.

I think someone from Apple's iPhone team secretly released this, because I'm sure even Apple employees jailbreak their phones. This one person just wanted to spark development and hacking on it before it was released.

I see no reason to Jailbreak your Itouch since you can restore it back to the original firmware. I have done jailbreak on mine and restored it 5 or 6 times just to prove that you can do it.

You can get an iPod/iPhone-formatted version at GearLive's site, as well as AppleTV, Xvid, and 3GP.

It's an British-ism :-)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ton:
"In the UK and most of the areas which used the Imperial system, the metric tonne (1,000 kg), which it is conveniently very similar to—less than 2% difference—is the only form of ton legal for trade."

I think apple will release 1.1.3 for the iPod touch, altough only with the rearranging and home bookmarks updates.
I doubt apple will add Mail and Maps anytime soon
