iPhone firmware 1.1.3 breaks unlocks

PadlocksThis continuing cat and mouse game reminds me of radar detectors. I recall when radar detectors first came out, and something akin to an arms race broke out between authorities and lead-footed civilians to stay one step ahead of each other. I'm fairly certain that's a race that won't end until modern transportation takes some strange turn. So it is with the iPhone unlock strategies, and according to iPhone Dev Team vet Nate True the 1.1.3 firmware update will once again break unlocks and third-party applications. The full post offers some fairly convincing reasons to believe that they've got the real scoop. I'm buying it.

Want to put a happy spin on this? Just be thankful that Apple doesn't allow the iPhone-hacking geniuses much idle time, lest some of them find other ways of showing their talent.

This sucks! i don't suppose anyone has advice for me, a Canadian with an unlocked 1.1.1, my iphone is kind of broken, a warning to put the phone in airplane mode keeps popping up, i'v hit the forums and seems the only solution is to send it back to apple. Even if i can convince them to send me a new one, or fix mine, i'll probably get it back with 1.1.3, which means i'll have a sweet paper weight.
i really hope someone unlocks 1.1.3 soon!! though it seems unlikely.

Gosh. Some of you guys are so uptight. A couple of points first and then, please, somebody tell me what I'm missing here.

1. Its a computer. If your not going to take advantage of that why spend the money. Get a samsung or a razr already... I personally know 6 people with iphones. 5 out of the 6 jailbroke thier iphones in order to use a handheld computer. The 6th should of just bought a phone with a camera......more money than sense...i guess. So, THANK YOU ERICA and all the others that make this possible for the rest of us. We want MORE. More apps. Much more of your detailed posts. Much Much more of the word IPHONE in TUAW.

2. If these progressions in knowledge are not to be documented here(TUAW). Where then? And what will get on your nerves next. Should we only talk about OS's. What about new tablet computers or apple financial news. Come on guys. All things Apple and Unofficial. That is what it's all about here, right? If the iphone posts bug you that much why even follow the threads much less post a comment.

I love how worked up non-iPhone users get about our excitement when news of a new update arrives and they realize that they are stuck with a primitive cell phone, and yet somehow they are drawn to the article enough to post something to hide their jealousy and tell us iPhone users how childish we are. But we are not mad about the new updates, nay, we are filled with glee to see what's next and what will happen when new features are added! Quit lying to yourselves and go get an iPhone and quit being the screendoor in our submarines! We don't troll your discussions on the mac mini or MacBook and say oh that MacBook is for losers... Or of course the ever popular "I don't see what the big deal is about a new mac I like my pc waaay better!" don't worry guys, we don't want your crappy Crackberries!

Let's say the *demand* for jailbreaking an iPhone right now is 25% (25% of iPhone users).

Anybody care to guess what it will be AFTER Apple releases the SDK? I'd guess 5%.

Point: I see a lot less demand and thus a lot less frequency in "jailbreak is broken/not broken" posts on TUAW. Thank the heavens.

Frankly, I am tired of iPhone posts all-together. Enough already - it's just another network specific (and limited) phone. TUAW - please move on to something that matters!

The positive side is that the update will close the holes that allow the iPhone/iPod Touch to become subject to a remote code execution vulnerability as the result of visiting a website!

A great big proportion of users will actually be HAPPY about this. The rest of you… well, nobody's forcing you to upgrade (I won't be, probably not until the SDK's out, if this arrives before it does).
