TUAW Responds: Ecamm to the rescue!!

TUAW reader Tommy E. writes: A while back I installed Make it Mine and entered my custom carrier logo as "ROBOTS" -- when springboard restarted, nothing happened to my carrier logo. Now, I just restored and updated to 1.1.2 (not jailbroken) and suddenly and surprisingly my carrier logo now reads "ROBOTS"! My problem is that I need to visit the Genius Bar because my headphone jack is wacky. Is there some way to get "AT&T" back up there?"
Fear not, Tommy. There's an easy fix for your problem. Ecamm's "Caption Crunch", which we discussed a while back can set or revert the time string. So today, I gave Glen of Ecamm an urgent "help our reader" IM. He responded by creating a custom version of their software that reverts the fake carrier logo created by MIM.
In case you didn't read that last paragraph fully. Let me re-iterate. Glen of Ecamm. Created. A. Custom. Application. Version. for our TUAW reader in need.
The software can be downloaded here. Make sure to send Ecamm a thank you note. And if you get a "No Carrier" message after setting the logo, just reboot.

...freaking awesome!
Still, I am not concerned in any way (Yet I have to get my hands on an iPhone at all), but I am more than impressed: cheers Ecamm, cheers Erica.

wouldn't the phone be jail broken to get the make it mine app on there? And to my knowledge that voids the warranty so wouldn't Apple not accept the phone since you wanted to take it to the Genius Bar?

It's not jailbreaking that voids the warranty, it's unlocking the phone by modifying the baseband.

If only that were true! Alas, their press release surrounding the unlocking software made it clear that any third-party apps void the warranty.

There's a little sign next to all of the iPhones in the Apple store that says basically "We'll service your Jailbroken iPhone, but we will 1. Restore it (losing your hard work) at our discretion and 2. Will not replace it."
There is an iPhone Revirginizer..........or something called "Restore iPhone" which doesn't reset the carrier name. (The reason is because MakeItMine modifies the PLists, which are backed up and put back on the iPhone after it is restored..........the same way that ECamm does this hack)

yeah thats what I thought was the case. Any third party apps would void the warranty. That is also why jail breaking the iPod Touch also voids the warranty.

yay jailbreaking does void the warranty if apple knows but its simple enough to restore the phone and then take it in with the problems your having... so as long as your smart about it, restore before you go in and are willing to jailbreak, download and set up all your custom apps again you can take it in. They will service it like any other iphone. I did it once because i had the not full battery charging problem and they switched it out no problem.

It does not require jailbreaking. You can read the original story for more details (it kind of fake a restore of only the plist file)

i have a problem. i used this and EDGE was turned off from the Settings->General->Network->Data Roaming. and after i used this EDGE is turned on and will not turn of. i put the AT&T sign back up because i had used the app that Erica had that changes the carrier and i had to restore to 1.1.2 because i had to take my phone to the genius bar. right now i have a non-jailbroken 1.1.2 iphone. can you put a patch that fixes the EDGE thing. I don't have DATA on my plan and i don't want to get charged.
Please and thank you.

So I ran into this same exact problem and when I reset my settings back to factory all was clear. Can someone confirm for me that after doing a restore all the third party apps and files are gone from the iPhones file system. I'm taking my phone in to the apple store I once worked at and they can be really picky with me as they know I hack things.

I had the same problem but another solution is very easy:
Restore the phone but don't use your backup. In other words just check the box to set it up as a new phone.
Wiped, clean & ready for genius inspection.
Don't put your personal info back on if you think they will be replacing the phone because of a hardware problem.

Wow! Painless and effortless! I am astounded at how quickly I was able to resolve my issue. Ecamm saved my ass! Thanks Ecamm as well as Erica for everything... I really didn't think my problem would generate this level of attention. Now, to the Genius Bar to solve my headphone issue. (Anyone have an iPhone headphone port problem where everything is jarbled?)
