Apple.com named Best Redesign of the Year

The awards continue to roll in for Apple. Earlier this week, the editors at InfoWorld named Mac OS X "Best Operating System," and the MacBook Pro the "Best Notebook Computer."

Today, a panel at .Net Magazine have identified Apple.com's recent makeover as their "Redesign of the Year." Remember the Aqua-style tabs that graced the top of the pages for so long? They disappeared in a redesign last year that made the whole site more closely resemble their product line.

The panel at .Net commented on the online Apple Store in particular, saying, "...the store is the one that's furthest ahead in terms of design and the markup behind it."

That's nice, because a lot of people will be looking at the store in a few days.

Their site redesign is garbage. I hate their new site which doesn't resize very well when changing browser windows, not to mention, doesn't fit well on certain screen sizes.

It's total garbage. What they have before was better despite the fact that I hated the aqua tabs. Some sections don't even work well on some browsers.

Terrible. I could think of twenty other sites better designed that deserve this award. I love Apple, but this fanboy shiznit is getting outta control and their morals have changed over the years.

Oh, but how their store layout gets stuck in the 3 column failure (unlike tuaw.com surprisingly):

Their code and css is a huge improvement, and they deserve that award, just picking on that one store comment specifically.

Why am I not surprised?

Their site is just as good as their super cool products.

We critiqued the apple.com redesign when it arrived internally and were pretty impressed. The navigational elements especially (similar to those used by Yahoo! Sports) are rather nice.

I'm not at all convinced the later Apple Store update was more significant in terms of the final effect, though I'm sure that behind the scenes it was more technically significant.

This gives me a chance to mention how truly innovative Apple is. Somehow, it has transcended from being just a computer or just a company into something that profoundly affects our daily lives. Is there any other product available today with as much interest and devotion as the iPhone? The forthcoming Newton/sub-mini will also inspire fierce loyalty.

You must be new here.

Anyways, I never liked the aqua tabs much, especially the pinstripes. They just didn't look as good as they did on apple's hardware, or even tiger/panther/etc.

But the still need to bring the whole store down when they add new products?

Come on, you must know they do this for dramatic effect. They are marketing geniuses after all.

I thought the look of the redesign was a little bit austere at first, but I warmed up to it, especially the functionality of those sidebar menus. They say consistency is the hallmark of small minds (actually, Ralph Waldo Emerson wrote words to that effect).

In the case of Apple's design, though, it's more like a cohesion that is the result of supreme self-awareness and -confidence: a powerful brand identity.

Hats off to apple for pulling of such a nice design. The transformation was amazing. From almost completely non-dynamic to ajax everywhere! The search feature is specially amazing.
