Confirmed: iTunes 7.6 needed for some successful 1.1.3 upgrades
A heads-up for those who are struggling to get iPhones updated: If you've tried upgrading your iPhone or iPod touch to 1.1.3 and are getting mysterious errors that keep you from finishing the upgrade or restore process, make sure you're already running iTunes 7.6. I'm hearing reports from various parties that pre-7.6 iTunes installations will may fail to properly upgrade iPhones and touches. After installing the newer software, the upgrades begin to work properly.
Update: It looks like there are 1.1.3 successes on both Mac and Windows without 7.6. If you do get the update error, go ahead and upgrade but as reader responses are showing, you may not need to upgrade beforehand.
Update 2: The specific errors you may encounter are 1603 and 1604. If you get these errors, update to 7.6, and if possible reboot both iPhone and your computer.

Still no sound for videos. Still looking for my money. iTunes 7.6 sucks. THANKS APPLE!

I updated my iTunes but politely declined the iPhone update...
I left my iPhone connected to my computer whilst the iTunes update was downloaded and installed. Mistako.
It now seems that although I can see all of my media on my phone when I SSH in, iTunes is telling my I have no media whatsoever on my phone HOWEVER still says that my phone's memory is fully taken up.
So, I now have to restore and fully resync my entire phone (contacts and all) from the ground up. Plus I now have to update to 1.1.3 against my wishes.
Same thing has happened with a mate's Touch so be warned.

My upgrade failed using iTunes 7.4.2, took it to the Apple Store and they were able to get it back up and running (all this happened before you posted this story or I would have saved a trip!)
At the Apple Store they didn't explain the issue, but one of the Genius's mumbled something about 1.1.3 trouble being a known issue.
updated to 1.1.3 tranmpgrify hack still there
January 16 2008 at 5:59 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyUpgraded fine with 7.5 after I opened up some space. 350MB free on the iPhone was NOT enough to upgrade. Opened up 1.5g and it worked fine.
I had a problem. In the middle of the update, my iPhone would randomly eject from the computer, creating an error, thus making the iPhone unusable unless it was wiped clean and restored. Huge pain in the ass. After the sync being interrupted seeeverrraalll times, I finally switched USB cords, and coincidentally (?), it synced fine after. I'm not sure if this has to do with being on 7.5 or if it was just a crappy USB cord.
January 16 2008 at 5:00 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyThe day before leaving for MacWorld, I tried to do the upgrade to 1.1.3 and experienced everything that could go wrong(it even said"Unable to Restore"). I panicked as I needed my iPhone in working order. Before I ran to my local Apple Store I figured I'd check for an iTunes update and, sure enough, I needed 7.6! I installed that and restarted the computer, and was able to Restore the phone to working order and re-sync from the backup!
I'm much happier now!
count me in as another iTunes 7.5.x Mac user that had no issues installing the 1.1.3 patch.
January 16 2008 at 4:45 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyAdd me to the list of people who was able to upgrade to 1.1.3 without upgrading to 7.6 (I had 7.5).
However, my iPhone is definitely less stable than 1.1.2, although that's likely due to bugs and not the use of 7.5 instead of 7.6. Because of 1.1.2 bugs, I've gotten into the habit of turning the iPhone off/on every couple of days. When I did this last night, the iPhone turned off, but would not turn back on. Fortunately, dropping the iPhone into the charging cradle (w/attached and plugged-in charger) made the iPhone come back to life ....
Maybe this is Windows only, I had no issues with 1.1.3 on 7.5.
