Found Images: iPhone Dinosaurs of the Past
Gallery: DemoApp Dinosaurs
Lurking within my iPhone's secret Demo.app utility, I came across these screen shots that seem to date back to at least six months before the iPhone actually debuted. I dug them out, converted them to a standard form (they were saved using non-standard PNG encoding) and put them into a gallery for you to enjoy. I find the color choices quite interesting and am glad that they ditched the bronze tones and went for blue-greys instead.
Update: Comments indicate the images may have been decoded backward (whoops!) causing the color shift. We'll investigate.
Update 2: The gallery has been updated with the corrected colors. There are still cool things to see in the out-dated images but fortunately, Apple's color design sense was not as bad as feared

I think the weird colors have to do with the way you decoded these images. It looks like red and blue and reversed.

I concur. It is interesting that the images were basically what they showed of the calendar, clocks, and calculator app at the keynote.

Yep -- you're displaying a BGR-encoded image as RGB... swap the channels and they look normal.

I saw those in the demo app a while back, but I guess I never looked at the dates, cool.

I agree with Darren. All the places where its blue on the current iPhone/touch shows up bronze in the photos, and there are no interface changes other than the colors. Also, it just doesn't seem very Apple-like to use bronze. It is very interesting to see, though, if it is real.

Regarding the notes, in a right-hand drive car, the stick shift is on the left (if it was on the right it'd be in the door!)
Funny pictures, though!

Also, you go left around roundabouts, not right.........

@Jon
In RHD countries going around a roundabout is a long right turn. You enter to the left, yeah, but you turn right.

It might as well be a bug in the conversion software, swap red and blue and you're fine :)

sorry to disappoint you but these are the right pictures. the encoding routine for the png went wrong. the blue colored parts should be redish and the red ones blueish.
happend to me when ic converted the original iphone icons such as edge etc.

it's funny how swapping color channels turns something from Apple/MacOS X look into somewhat more ubuntu look :D

Darren's right. Flip the red and blue channels and they look just like the current iPhone.

These pictures (even if they were decoded wrong) are not identical to the current iPhone UI.
Differences:
- In notes there's a comma after the date and before the time. There's no comma in the current UI.
- No e-mail icon in Notes. (That one's pretty obvious)
- In Notes their is a gradient applied to the title.
- In Calendar, the Today button is slightly less wide.
- In World Clock, the AM and PM font is much larger than the current one.
There are more differences but I'm sure you get the point by now.

Good eye, I agree that these colors are just a decoding error, but these are definitely early version of the Apps.
Another difference that I notices is the the Alarm icon on the World Clock screen is point at about 7oclock while the final version (at least 1.1.3) is pointed at 9oclock. That seems like a really random change....

i still hate that blue theme. However, its really easy to edit and now i have a great black skin!

How do you change the theme? I am interested in a black theme too.

Hiya,
I have a set of channel-swapped images posted if anyone's interested...

The one that really stands out as a possible decoding issue is the calculator. The iPhone's calculator is an obvious homage to the classic Braun ET44 and ET66 calculator designs. Thus, there would be no reason to have deviated from the button colors of the original.

Erica,
The red and blue channels are still reversed on the World Clock image.
