iPhone 1.1.3 update: Google Maps first impressions

This particular post won't be near as in-depth as one Erica might do (she knows way more about the iPhone than I) but I just wanted to share my first impressions of the new Google Maps functionality on the iPhone after today's 1.1.3 software update. Granted, some would call me crazy for updating such a critical piece of equipment as my iPhone during a busy time like Macworld. But hey, let's live on the edge, shall we?

Throwing caution to the wind I made the leap and charged ahead with the update. Before I go on let me mention that I have the most vanilla iPhone out there with no hacks or custom anything (not even ringtones) so the update was a smooth process for me. In and out in under five minutes. Once done and restarted I began to explore what had changed. One of the first things I really wanted to try out was the new maps functionality.

Fortunately, an opportunity put the new Google Maps through its paces presented itself immediately; I had to join my fellow TUAW crew at a Macworld party, but all I had was the address with no idea how to get there. Which direction should I go, and how far? Fortunately, these questions were no match for the iPhone's new maps functionality.

To do this I first clicked on the Google Maps tool on the iPhone and then on the brand new button in the lower left corner of the screen (looks somewhat like a target crosshair) and waited a few moments while my iPhone triangulated my position using nearby cell towers. Impressively, it located my position almost exactly, and displayed it on the screen. Next, I pressed the directions button and in the new window I saw that next to "Start" was "Current Location" -- obviously where I was at the moment -- and below that I entered the address of where I wanted to go.

Once done I pressed the 'Route" button and in about five seconds was presented with a detailed route to my destination complete with a purple line on the map to follow. I admit when I first heard about this feature in the 1.1.3 update I was a bit skeptical about how well it would work. I'm happy to report that, at least in this first-impressions situation, it performed exactly as advertised. Although, I guess I should have expected that from an Apple product. They do seem to pretty much always turn out well.

UPDATE: OK, we fixed the title.

Now that the ZiPhone guy has given us unlocking on 1.1.3 it turns out the Google Maps Locate Me feature works on other networks .. see http://www.flickr.com/photos/aldiscon/2277258483/ . Might be interesting to do a poll of readers on other networks to see how many it works on.

I hate it! Now that I've updated I've lost the ability to view in street view on maps. What gives? Why did they do this? It was one of my favorite things about my iphone.

I added the new apps last night and tried out the maps feature. It's surprisingly accurate and very easy to use. My actual location was in the center of the circle with the radius about 200 feet from me.

I was just flying in my F-16 at
MACH 1 and I pressed the locate feature
on my iPhone. It got really hot,
the glass cracked and my battery melted.

So accurate here in Albuquerque it's almost scary! The "crosshairs" are aimed right at my driveway, about 6 feet away.
If only my phone reception worked that well......
I really like this update, it has many things that are useful to me!
FYI: itoner ringtones are broken, but the Rogueamoeba app still works like a charm.

I'm in a suburb of Sacramento, California. At home, it placed me a few miles too far south and on the wrong side of a lake (don't know if that last part matters much). At work, it couldn't locate me until I turned off the Wifi (as suggested by a previous commenter), then it was accurate to about a mile. On the whole, I'd rate the feature a solid "...eh."

I've had mixed results here in NYC. The first time, my location was pinned right down to my apartment building.

Next time, while walking down the street, location was specified as somewhere between Battery Park and Central Park. Not so hot.

In my office building, first attempt landed me right on the dot, but second one was several blocks over.

It remains to be seen how accurate this is outside of and around different parts of the city. For now, I'm still pretty impressed.

I had the previous version of maps on my Blackberry and the triangulation was almost dead on. When I used the Blackberry the route to my job was plotted with the major roads with no trouble. When I did it with the iPhone version it had me heading North on the turnpike just to get to a highway that is literally within walking distance and then perform uturns to get to my office, which again is far off from the beta version I downloaded for my Blackberry. Is there a way to configure the app to find the most direct route? I can live with the closeness factor if I at least could get to my destination.
