TUAW Reader Randal S. writes in with a happy unbricking story. After running AnySIM on his 1.0.2 iPhone, he ignored the warnings and upgraded his phone to a 1.1.1 brick. "Even taking it back to 1.0.2, I couldn't get past the bad IMEI and SIM messages. I tried many things to get it fixed. Hopeless."
Now, after the release of 1.1.3, he tried putting his now-1.0.2 phone into recovery mode and updated it to 1.1.3. "It rewrote the firmware, and I now have a fully functional 1.1.3 phone! Yeay! So 1.1.3 firmware must be a complete rewrite. Just FYI, but you probably already knew."
See, TUAW readers? Happy endings do come true! His 1.1.3 phone is back to being locked but it's working again and can be used on the AT&T network.

After upgrading my iTouch to 1.1.3, I see no reason to jailbreak, even when it comes out, seeing as I have a more stable iPod.

I think a lot of people are going to be in this same boat. Maybe we'll stop getting the string of liveblogs for jailbreaking 1.x.x firmware now.

And maybe we'll stop getting the constant stream of people bitching about the iphone hacking posts. ;-)

How about Mail and Notes without the $20 price tag?
I won't go into details, but it's possible to install the iPhone versions on an iPod Touch. Which makes me wonder just what Apple's product development people were smoking when they decided to charge for them on the iPod.

It's only fair because there no subscription services tied to the iPod. I don't mind paying $20 if it will give me the exact same features as a jailbroken iPod (that I use) while still being kept under warranty.

Weblogs, Inc., (they run TUAW, etc.) has had a number of short term weblogs for various products and ideas, etc. I really think it might be time they spin off a blog from TUAW that's just for ipods and ipod hacking. Look at how well hacking related sites like hackaday do.

there's no such thing as an iTouch; it's called an iPod Touch because it's an iPod.

Keep me up to date on The Young And The Touchless
I did a similar dumb thing and bought iPhoneSimFree and it fixed it, so I'm good.

Thanks for fixing his phone I guess, Apple, no matter how incidental it was. Not that I felt that bad in the first place seeing as he ignored warnings, but still.

Is anyone actively working on hacking 1.1.3 for unlocking the phone? Are there any updates on unlocking an out-of-the-box 1.1.2 phone?

Nope, the entire community just called it quits when 1.1.3 came out. "There's just no interest in an unlocked iPhone anymore" they said.

I keep seeing these comments about people wanting to still jailbreak their iPwns/iTouches. The thing is, the reason people bothered to jailbreak in the first place was to use other apps. When those other apps become available, there really won't be any more reason to bother jailbreaking.
I have a jailbroken iTouch that is still running 1.1.2, but I would love to go legit with 1.1.3, but I am still waiting to the legit third-party apps to come out, specifically an iChat (or similar) IM app and an e-book reader. Once those two apps are available (natively) on the iTouch, there really isn't any more need for me to bother jailbreaking it.

Exactly, I only wanted the iPhone apps, and now with 1.1.3 I have them.
And with the SDK about to arrive, well, more supported apps are on the way too.

Does anyone know if 1.1.3 completely restores the baseband, and everything else that AnySIM, IPSF etc. etc. removes /changes?
i.e. A complete revirginize?

If he hadn't fucked with it in the first place, it would've worked all along.

i think what's more important i the ability to unlock. sure the SDK will solve the problem of putting extra apps on the iphone sans any jailbreaking...but i want to be able to use my t-mobile service without having to surrender my soul to AT&T
