Mark from HackThatPhone is awesome!
These guides are just incredible. His 1.1.2 OTB HW unlock guide is just as awesome.

You may want to save the hassle, since the 1.1.3 jailbreak is coming soon: http://www.modiphone.net/multiple-exploits-found-113-jailbreak-coming-soon/

Does that mean that you can buy a brand new phone and use it with non at&t contract?... let say T-mobile or what ever foreigner carrier?

My understanding is that you can downgrade an iPhone with Out-Of-Box firmware 1.1.3 to 1.1.1, etc.
However you WILL NOT be able to use the iPhone for phone functionality.
You WILL be able to use it for iPod functionality once Activated and Jailbroken.
Again, this is just my understanding, I haven't found a definitive answer in any of the iPhone blogs.
I hope this is the case because I'm getting an iPhone in the next few days and I can live without the phone functionality until an Unlock arrives. But if I can't use it for anything at all, well... that will be a tough pill to swallow.

His install at the beginning requires bootloader 3.9. Which diminishes the chances for many of us, still left with a really expensive iPod with no phone. Viva the Hackers...we have hope as long as they are working on it!

Well this is what i did
i have a mac...
i have my iPod connected to iTunes
i held onto the power/home button
when the iPod disappears from the sidebar let go of the power button, keep holding the home button
hold the home button until the ipod comes back and it should work when you use the regular process to downgrade back to 1.1.1(make sure u have it though)

OK, probably stupid questions, but here goes.
1. If I bought my iPhone with 1.0.1 on it, do I have bootloader 3.9?
2. Is jailbreaking a permanent modification? Meaning, after a restore, though 3rd party functionality is gone, is my iPhone in a different state than it would have been in, had i never jailbroken it.
3. Are there certain packages that permanently alter the iPhone (such as BSD Subsystem, or Oktoprep?)
4. If, after following this guide I decide to go back to 1.1.3, will my iPhone be in the same state as it was before the downgrade?

Hey. I'm getting the exact same error. Did you ever get past this? From what everyone else says, it means I got into restore mode wrong, but I don't know what to do differently. I am holding Home and Sleep/Wake, and then it goes to the screen where you can slide across to shut down. I keep holding those 2 buttons and then the screen turns off. After that nothing happens (its off), so I let go of the Sleep/Wake button, push it again very briefly, and then let go holding only the home button until the restore window comes up. After that I get the error (1).
Any ideas anyone?

I have the same issue, can't get past the error (1). I have a theory that this is due to there not being sufficient space on the device due to the 1.1.3 image copy being on there.
Anybody else got the same issue and has anybody resolved it?
Phone details - was unlocked and jailbroken 1.1.2 running fine and dandy with unlocked UK O2 sim (not iPhone O2 SIM). Phone was originally from the states (I'm in the uk).
I just can't get it to downgrade and it's doing my head in!

Ok, sorted the error (1) thanks to HackThatPhone.com. It's to do with the way you enter the DFU mode. To get it to restore properly, use this:
Turn the iPhone on and plug it into iTunes. Put it into DFU mode by holding the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons for 10 seconds. The screen will go black. Let go of the Sleep/Wake button. Continue holding the Home button for another 10 seconds and iTunes will detect that the iPhone is in recovery mode and display this pop up. Click OK.
Then just follow the steps on the hackthatphone.com site.
Result.
