EDGE down

Lots of annoyed iPhone users today in the central US. Apparently, the servers responsible for running the EDGE network for AT&T are down, depriving many iPhone users of their normal connectivity.
This outage is affecting users from Chicago to Kansas. If you're part of the affected customer base, let us know in the comments. According to poster BBuehner at the Apple Support discussions forum, AT&T says the problem should be fixed by the end of today but could go as long as February 5th.

Lost Edge connectivity sometime before 6:40pm in the San Fran Bay Area. It is midnight and it is still not back up. Their support could not give an eta on this. Discussions on the att wireless apple forum seem to indicate it is widespread on the west coast (http://forums.wireless.att.com/cng/board/message?board.id=apple&thread.id=17233&view=by_date_ascending&page=3)

No edge in LA area still...
Apparently, none of you know anything about wireless technologies. EDGE stands for Enhanced Data Rates for GPRS Evolution - Its just GPRS with some differences on the carrier's end. If a carrier's EDGE servers are down, your iPhone or any other GSM device will still be able to transfer packet data over GPRS, just at slower speeds than EDGE. On the iphone this is a seamless transition, and the only difference you will notice is a slight decline in transfer speed and the disappearance of the "E" from the EDGE icon in the menu bar. Its really ridiculous that this even gets in the news...

I have had my iPhone since its June release and have never had a problem until this week. I am on the east coast and we were still getting messages that Edge was not available as of this afternoon. Contrary to your message the iPhone doesn't work on the web, no email, no weather or Google Maps when Edge is not working unless you happen to be near an available WIFI. Do you own an iPhone? John
