TUAW Responds: Creating Web Clips with User Names and Passwords
TUAW reader Rudi writes that he needs web clips on his iPhone that "prefix my web path with a username and password, great for things like web based corporate email." In response to Rudi and to anyone else who needs special-purpose URLs, including ones that make telephone calls (using the tel:// prefix instead of http://), here's ClipIt.
When run, it prompts you for a web clip name and URL. Enter these and tap Create. The utility builds a new web clip for you and places it on your home screen. There's no way to go back and fix a URL with this (and of course, being the iPhone, no cut & paste yet), so make sure you've entered it carefully the first time.
If you're looking to create a telephone link, build a URL that starts with tel://, e.g. tel://202-456-1111. When tapped, the web clip first opens Safari, which then asks you to confirm whether you want to continue placing the call. ClipIt, with its web clip functionality, works only on iPhone firmware 1.1.3 and higher.

How can I add the username and password to the URL if I'm trying to log into my corp webmail account. For example I enter the URL https://webmail.xxxx.com and it ask for username and password. I've tried putting url/username/password but that doesn't work. It would be great if this would allow me to create a shortcut on the iphone springboard that would automatically take me to the webmail and automatically login.
TIA
Well for all those who want to use ClipIt for your speed dial telephone numbers, give try to this web app:

I created it, and it supports custom icons with your contact's name, or you can use any of web image as a webclip icon using a bookmarklet. You can do it all without syncing to iTunes.. so I think, give it a try..and let me know what u think about it..
Wow avadh! your solution worked great! Just remember to hit "cancel" when it prompts you to make the call. I couldn't get the image URL to work but I now have an easy quick call button on my non-jailbroken 1.1.3 iphone.

And also you can check other web app i created, using that you can choose any image as icon to any website's webclip.

How would this work? I can't WAIT to get some of my most used phone numbers on my home screen. I have a non-jailbroken 1.1.3 iPhone...

February 01 2008 at 2:17 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down Replywould this work to login to a WPA 802.1X protected W-Lan if it does NOT have a homepage for login? Would there be a way to "send" the password like this? :/
But the iphone doesn't support the certificate i guess?
Why is 802.1X support something that people aren't upset about anymore? Am i the only one lamenting .. i really believed it would come with 1.1.3 :/
It would be great if you could create a small avatar for a telephone number web clip - ideally the persons profile photo - I know the number input is independent from the contact - but it would be pretty cool.
January 31 2008 at 6:40 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplySo, am I supposed to visit this link from my phone? If so, i get a "safari can't download this file" error. From my desktop? Then what? Is this for non-jailbroken phones or.....?
Color me "confused"
Hey Erica, is there anything I can do to log into my colleges network (LEAP)?

That sound you hear is your company's network security administrator pulling his hair out.
"What sort of protection do iPhones have against data recovery if they're stolen?"
If you haven't set the keypad lock, pretty much none, which is why bookmarks that include passwords (while undeniably convenient) are perhaps a less-than-ideal solution to this particular problem.
Nice work, Erica. But how about a third (optional) field for a custom webclip icon url? I think that is what's really missing.
January 31 2008 at 5:39 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI think it's funny that Apple calls Web-clips "bookmarks" when I try to delete one from my Home Screen.
Are you sure you want to delete the bookmark "Google"?
It's not a "bookmark" Apple ¿
