Updated jailbreakme.com eases upgrade path
If you've upgraded recently to firmware 1.1.3 on your iPhone or iPod touch, you'll probably have first downgraded to firmware 1.1.1 and used the popular jailbreakme.com site. Well, it looks like jailbreakme has undergone some massive updates to make this process easier and more optimized. It now automatically oktopreps your 1.1.1 installation, installs the latest Installer.app version (including community sources so you get the new modmyifone source), and cleans up after itself more thoroughly (.svn and youtube.zip files anyone?).
Once you've done the 1.1.1 downgrade bit, be sure to check out the 1.1.2 upgrade guide as well. You'll quickly be on your way to 1.1.3 happiness. Doesn't seem to be working? Make sure you've connect your iPod or iPhone to your computer via the USB cable. There's a handy FAQ available that answers other common questions.

There is a massive absence of objective info out there on the upgrade/unlock situation.
Majority of people want a reliable phone and have unlocked out of necessity. Only a minority enjoy the SSH stuff that I find sweat-inducing!
A lot of people, myself included unlocked either 1.0.2 or 1.1.1 so they could have a WORKING iPhone. Since 1.1.2 and 1.1.3 there has been loads of stuff going on and a lot of us don't want to risk our iPhones for marginal gains.
QUESTION: Am I correct in thinking that 1.1.3 is attainable for all and there is an AnySIM for it and iphonesimfree works too?
But, am I also correct that things have got a bit more fidddly and buggy and there are issues with signal strength etc. ?
Can we pool together a list of info sources that do not need SSH or mini-boot understanding and work out what the average Joe can do without spending hours trying to iron out bugs. Cheers. Sorry for post length.

i still have 1.1.1 due to an unlock i use for my t-mobile sim
i do have the phone jailbroken, however i feel like i am missing out on some 1.1.2 and 1.1.3 action
what are my options of upgrading to 1.1.2 then to 1.1.3 while maintaining my unlock?
let me know, thanks
tim
@Murphymac
Hey, I had the same problem. It has to do with itunes 7.6, which I'm assuming you're running. This worked for me: download and run the latest version of INdependence(MAC) or ibricker(Win) when your touch goes into recovery, then your touch should reboot a couple times. PRESTO! Jailbroken 1.1.2. Also, I've only tested this on a Mac. Hope this helps you.

You took my remarks a little too personally. They weren't directed at any one individual, just a common thread here and on other similar iPhone jailbreaking posts amongst many who haven't even tried any of this saying how risky and stupid it is. That is FUD.
If I can do this stuff, anyone can. To say otherwise is FUD.
Enjoy your 1.1.2 device. If it is what you find most useable, I won't complain.
I go back to what I said about patience. Last time I looked at Installer.app's welcome screen, it still says:
1.1.3 ONLY RECOMMENDED FOR DEVELOPERS
The last time I was in the "official" jailbreak IRC rooms, the bulletins were along the same lines, don't go 1.1.3 yet.
That certainly tells me if I try to proceed with it, that there may be complications. Some of you appear to have ran into them. You should have heeded the advice of those who wrote the procedures if you weren't prepared to deal with the consequences.
My experience with 1.1.3 is much different than yours. Other than an Apple bug of bluetooth not working well with my car now, I have a STABLE, JAILBROKEN, iPhone at 1.1.3 with all the applications I listed in another comment working well. Including many you say you couldn't get to work.
If you live in the Los Angeles area, I'd be happy to let you buy me a cup of Starbucks while I show you my phone to prove my veracity.
I suspect your issues with 1.1.3 were one of two things.
You either jumped the gun and used the NateTrue method, which is known to have problems, or you missed a step in the instructions.
Most likely step you missed is that you should move your /Applications folder from the root partition to the much larger media partition on the drive and put a symlink to it. BigBoss has a tool on Installer.app that does it automatically for you. For added compatibility, changing unix permissions on a couple of folders may help as well.
If you leave /Applications in the original location, I believe the partition fills up too fast and you run out of disk space, causing applications to not install properly, or not run.
Not my job to figure out what you did wrong, and the links are all over this thread. I suggest you go two places if you want to try again:
IRC chat room where the devs hang out.
ModMyiFone.com, which has some good stuff, though I don't recommend their method or the file they provide for download, get the stuff from the Dev Team directly...when I compared files last week, MMI's was missing some stuff in it.

We each decide what value a certain app adds to our lives and products. It's a personal decision.
For me, the games are just an occasional diversion when stuck in a situation where I need to kill a few minutes. I can live without them, but if the device is able to support them, and they're out there, and I can get them on the device, I'm going to do it.
"Must have" apps for me:
Voice Notes - iPhone is the first cell phone I've owned in this century that wouldn't let me make a little short voice note, despite it being the most advanced piece of hardware in that market. Senseless.
VoiceDialing - one button access to voice dial system while driving. Much much safer, and again, iPhone's first phone in many years I've owned that didn't make voice dialing easy.
VNSea - very few options out there for web based remote control apps for Macs, and no free ones. Is iPhone a great remote access platform? No, but it's better than nothing in a pinch.
ApolloIM - granted, not so stable in 1.1.3 hacked (yet), but again, iPhone is first phone in many years I've owned that won't let me get Yahoo or AOL chat client running.
Contacts/Address Book on the HOME SCREEN **not** buried a couple of keystrokes into the phone application. C'mon Apple, that's just a stupid design decision. It should be a user option if nothing else. This ability alone is worth it for me to hack the device.
Frankly, your list may be different, and I don't care if you approve of mine or not. It's my device, and while it had value for me as-is out of the package, if I choose to add value to it through various means, that's my decision. Make your own and be happy with it. I am satisfied with mine. And if I get a thrill out of hacking my device (I don't, btw), what's it to you? Getting thrills that way doesn't hurt anyone else, does it?

P.S. - I forgot to mention that EDGE and WiFi aren't always there for me. In Northern Los Angeles County, the EDGE signal frequently not strong enough to get inside many of the buildings I go into. Relying solely on web applications is not acceptable in some locations; to suggest they are a panacea is misleading.
@ Punkass Jim - good points - I am happy with what I have got running - but I feel for the thousands of folks who will get stuck.
I have read a pile of stuff lately, but I am still not sure about 3rd party apps.
@DistortedLoop - Hey, thats the info we need!
A list of what does work, and real 'been there' knowledge.
I accept your criticism and I thank you for your information.
@ TUAW - Erica we need MORE info!
@HarmfulDose - more good advice - thanks! I have felt for a while that too many of my apps are somehow slowing down my 1.1.1.
Thanks for the great replies and if I offended anyone, it was not my intention to do so.
Here in Canada, there is zero fallback position.
If the hack dont work, the iPhone dont work.
I accept that.
But its the best damn phone/computer/pda/ipod that has ever existed!
Its improved my phone life by 1000 per cent - I shiver at the thought of having to use a Razr again if my iPhone didnt work.....
For the record, I am a 2000 minutes a month iPhone user.
I know, I know.
@harrywolf, if you're using your iPhone for business and talking 2000 min/mo. (that's 100 min. day each and every working day!), maybe you should consider just buying an already jailbroken 1.1.3. phone from a grey-market supplier like cellengros.com in Montreal.

I want to do the work myself, but I have had trouble understanding this latest upgrade path.
Just want to say that with all the minutes I use, and the email, and the Google maps (I have a 500mb data plan from Rogers for $80 a month) the iPhone has been 100% reliable.
It is now into its 5th or 6th month of heavy use, and to further protect it when I am in a hostile environment, I bought the OtterBox waterproof case. Not bad, but you must use headphones.
I want 16gb, and I want Apple to come to Canada with the iPhone - soon.
My iphone seems to work better than when i was at
1.1.1 for some reason calling and getting calls was a hassle
it would fail or go straight to voicemail. I followed the guides
step by step and without any hang ups it worked. Being able to see lyrics on the iphone is sweet.
I would advise you if you DO decide to try the upgrade
you should really uninstall everything down to the bare
minimum utilities you need to get the jailbreak going. The less
changes your iphone has to its system defaults the better. I really think that is why people keep messing up and getting "incomplete" firmware updates. I stripped off everything, yeah you have to wait till app's are compatible
but the iphone is still an iphone and I enjoy it as such.
I wish people who don't know what they're talking about would stop spreading FUD here.
Anyone who can read and follow instructions should be able to have a 1.1.3 iPhone running with all the 3rd party apps they desire. I'm not the sharpest tool in the shed (nor the dullest) and I've managed every upgrade with no trouble.
My current iPhone is at Dev Team 1.1.3 jaibroke firmware and the BossTool symlink for application applied.
Google Find Me and all other Apple upgrades working, as well as all the following 3rd Party apps working just fine:
Installer.app
VoiceDial (my own little hacked app)
Services
Boss Prefs
Apple Files Sharing Server
SSH
SysInfo
Stumbler
Flashlight/Blinker/RedLight apps
Camera Pro
VoiceNotes
Locate Me
WeDict
Converter
iSplit
Splitter
Five Dice
Domino
iMoon
Lights Off
iSolitaire
iBlackJack
Tetromino
Backgammon
Chess
Othello
Minesweep
VNSea
iFob
iLevel
ApolloIM - might be working.
TapTapRevolution - slickest game out there, but I rarely played it.
Wonderful vagueness!
People who 'know' a process always write the worst instructions because they assume too much.
Heres my questions:
I have an unlocked and jailbroken iPhone running 1.1.1.
(I unlocked it myself using Independence etc.)
Is 1.1.3 worth doing?
Can I still use my phone as a phone?
Can I still use the 3rd party apps?
Have I really got to go to 1.1.2 first?
If its so 'easy', why is there a warning on Installer that says '1.1.3 is really only for developers'?
Something for the iphone hack crowd to remember:
'Jailbreaking' (stupid name) and 'unlocking' are confusing terms - all most of us really want to know is if the phone will still work on our chosen network.
I still dont know, after reading a ton o' verbiage on various sites over the last few weeks, whether I can actually upgrade to Firmware 1.1.3 from 1.1.1 with my Canadian unlocked iPhone or not.
Someone explain all this - because its frickin' incomprehensible!
And please dont reply with 'read the instructions' I already did that and they are not CLEAR.
The instructions on jailbreakme.com are NOT clear.
The instructions on Independence are NOT CLEAR.
The instructions have an ambiguity and susbsequent complexity that causes confusion.
IS that CLEAR?
I upgraded my jailbroken Touch to 1.1.3, and lost my mail, notes, weather, stocks, google maps, because there wasn't a supported 1.1.3 version. So, I went to 1.1.3 official with the software upgrade, but of course lost all my 3r party apps I really enjoyed. Is there a way, I can go back to 1.1.3 jailbroken, and have all the mail, notes, etc., and have 3rd party apps as well?

Thats what we need - some sage advice from a person who has been there.
I will stay with 1.1.1.
So the question can be repeated - WHY is TUAW publishing this 'upgrade' information without proper testing and when all the evidence seems to be against it?
