Apple increases iPhone, iPod touch storage capacity
After a brief downtime, the US Apple Store came back online this morning with updated, larger-capacity iPhone and iPod touch models. Our colleagues at Engadget called this update about five hours before it hit the street. The iPhone is now available with 8GB (at $399US) or 16GB (at $499US) of storage. The iPod touch is now available in three models; 8GB ($299US), 16GB($399US) and 32GB($499US). Note that the 16GB iPhone and the 32GB iPod touch are both $499, while there's a one hundred dollar difference between the 16GB iPhone and the 16GB iPod model.
[Nik notes from across the pond: the 16 GB iPhone is available in the UK for £329, and the 32GB iPod touch is also £329 (inc VAT).]
Thanks to everyone who sent this in!

(and UK)

Oh no it's not in the UK! Not on the Apple Store anyway.
Boo hiss. I was waiting for a G3 iPhone, but with the improved tariff and now 16GB, whenever that gets to the UK, it's looking more attractive. Repeat: don't fall for the marketing, don't fall for the marketing, ....

Can someone point me in the direction of a 16Gb iPhone??
Doesn't llok like there's been a UK release!

It's definitely not on the UK Apple Store yet - I speculated on my blog whether this might be for one of two reasons - either simply they haven't updated the UK store yet - or since we already know that sales in the UK and Europe haven't been as high as hoped, perhaps they're waiting for a short while for inventory to clear before introducing the models in the UK store?

That was always the choice... The only difference is that double the space is now 32GB, not 16.

If I upgrade from a 4 gig iPhone to the 16 gig, do I have to sign a new contract with AT&T? If so, it's a nonstarter for me.

I *think* you can keep your same contract, just add a phone and remove the old one, or something like that. I'd just call or e-mail att.

I know with "normal" sim card phones, you just put existing sim in new phone and it works. I doubt this is the case with the iPhone.

Wow, so much for holding out for the 16Gig/3G version.
What do you think? If Apple is releasing the 16G version to keep sales momentum going, then it looks like the 3G will be coming much later, rather than the original June estimate.

I am starting to think the june release will be a new version of the iphone....probably a redesign to add more nand slots...3g and other features....kinda makes sense to start expanding the product line.

That theory lacks merit, since there is a huge space of time between now and June. Sure todays update will spur sales, but it's irrelevant to the timetable of 3G inclusion.

Have AT&T fixed the porting of numbers on GoPhones to post-paid iPhones?

You'd have been subjected to "early adopter screwage" if they had done this in August. Now? Not so much.

Huh? Let me list the ways you aren't making sense:
1. The increased storage models cost $100 more.
2. The price on the model you have now is the same today as it was yesterday.
3. Your current iPhone/iPod still works.
Sam said 2:28PM on 2-05-2008
um..
its now $500 for a 16 gig iphone
it was $600 for an 8 gig iphone, but the $100 rebate made it 500. Then they made it $400. So I feel I still got screwed out of my 8 gigs.

Here you go I've said it.

...And I was -just- about to purchase an iPod touch a week ago. The reason why I laid it off was because it was 16GB, a few gigabytes under my music library size. Now with 32GB, I should be able to fit all my music and then some. I may actually consider purchasing one soon!

I'm in the exact same position as you. I'm starting to get jealous of all the iPod touches and iPhones on campus, and with my library hovering around 16GB (flucuates with podcasts), I just couldn't sacrifice some music for the 16BG version.
But 500$? Thats twice what I paid for my 30GB iPod video!
