Flash coming to iPhone?
With the internets all a-flutter over Mac OS X 10.5.2 arriving on the scene, this tid-bit is in from GearLive -- yes, the very same folks who brought us news of the jiggly icons on the iPhone that we were somewhat doubtful of.This time around, GearLive is reporting that we can expect to see Flash on the iPhone (and one would assume, iPod touch) 'very, very soon'. No doubt, that brings joy to many people's lives -- Flash has long been one of the most in-demand additions to the iPhone -- but some of us Flash cynics can't help but feel that for Flash sites whose usability is perhaps compromised on the desktop, we're happier with it staying off of our handheld devices.
Flash gripes aside, chatting with Andru from GearLive tonight they're mighty confident of their sources and have a good track record. Let's just see how this one runs, shall we?

Yeah some of you are jaded by flash for no valid reason at all. SURE there are really bad flash sites, but the claims of Flash running slow on a Mac are just false. I have a Macbook Pro and it kicks the crap out of my XPS Dell Desktop, and every other PC I own. Not only with Flash Player but nearly all apps.
I tend to think the BEST sites are in flash now. And who said that flash is a bandwidth hog? That couldn't be more false. It all depends on the developer. If he forces you to download the entire site before you can view anything, then yes it takes forever but it's ONE download. Most flash developers now are intelligent enough to actually preload only what is needed and therefore you get a very nice interface with minimal bandwidth usage.
If you don't like flash on your iPhone (when it comes out) just disable it or don't install it. Then when you are trying to view Youtube or any other flash rich site out there we'll laugh at your frustration.
Well, I certainly love the videocapabilities of Flash and I can't wait to have them on my touch. And when looking at what Flash Lite can deliver on mobile devices with even slower CPUs I trust Adobe to deliver something on the ARM platform that handles memory, performance and battery in the best manner. Let us just see and judge from there. As Flash nowadays is really a rich internet platform instead of just animated websites I certainly see the benefits of having Flash on the iPhone/iPod Touch.

Why wouldn't you want all the same functionality available on your desktop machine available to you on your handheld as an option? Just like most portable devices (i.e. pocket pc), I'm sure you will be given the option to either install it or deactivate it. I for one am sick of browsing the web and missing important parts of sites. Until flash isn't the defacto, count me in as someone who is very happy to see it finally coming...

You know, kind of like how you can't buy iTunes songs over Edge (presumably because AT&T wants a cut). So if Flash does come to iPhone, it will probably be over WiFi only.
802.1X SUPPORT ! NOW ! DAMNIT! :/

Meanwhile, this is one of the last things that made the iPhone Safari a watered down Internet, contrary to the advertising. With Flash, it will be a large bit closer to being the REAL Internet.

And because of flash... now I know that the future of the internet is going to be a two way communication tool for the next interactive television systems with all shapes and sizes. And today flash has the potential of killing all video codec out there and that includes the HD-DVD/BlueRay formats.
Now check it out what I can do with flash8: http://www.interactivedna.com/HD_FullScreen
PS: I recommend a DUO laptop/pc/mac to view HD content!

Amazing HD video Ney!
âVery impressive, looks excellent, the best quality flash video Iâve seen. HD flash8?"
Will your video play in flashlite3?

While I agree about flash and its suckiness in general, and its extreme suckiness on the Mac, I do think it would be a welcome addition, if done right. I am thinking something along the lines of a little grey box where the Flash element is with a "Touch to activate" While it is great to be able to go to pages without flash ads bugging you, it sure would be nice to "Touch and activate" an embedded YouTube video or something. A there when you need it, hidden when you don't approach would make everybody happy. :-)

While it's nice that we might eventually see Flash capability on the iPhone, if there's not a built-in way to customize the experience (i.e. block it on certain pages but not others) - it will degrade the quality of the mobile Safari experience overall.
