The Apple Store is down. On a Tuesday...
As many of you have e-mailed us, the Apple Store is indeed down. Usually when this happens, I tend to kind of ignore it -- nine times out of ten, it is nothing -- but it's a Tuesday. Plus, given the rumors and speculation of an impending MacBook Pro refresh...We're hitting our refresh buttons and will let you know what happens as soon as the store reopens.
Thanks to everyone who sent this in!

Down in Canada too. And I just ordered a MacBook. Can I get a refund or something if they announce new features or lower prices?

I believe that if it hasn't shipped, yes -- if it has, but you haven't received it, call and raise bloody murder in the event that the MB is updated.
Michel said 7:40AM on 2-12-2008
yes you can.
tdowling said 7:47AM on 2-12-2008
Yeah, you can get a price adjustment if it's within two weeks. I think you can exchage for an upgraded model only if it's unopened, though

No need to sit there refreshing. Try this (lifted and tweaked from a previous commented, some other time and place):
#!/bin/bash
while [ "0" = "0" ]
do
curlgrep=`curl http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore 2>/dev/null | grep "back soon"`
if [ "$curlgrep" = "" ]
then
osascript -e "tell application \"System Events\" to display dialog \"Apple Store back online\nhttp://store.apple.com\"" &
open http://store.apple.com
exit
else
echo "Still down"
fi
sleep 30
done

Hey, that's pretty sweet!

We need this wrapped up into an application, sitting in the taskbar (probably as a yellow postit) and notifying using Growl. Anyone?

here's a crappy version modified for bash/curl/grep on windows... i wish i had a mac at work =(
#!/bin/bash
while [ "0" = "0" ]
do
curlgrep=`curl http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore 2>/dev/null | grep "back soon"`
if [ "$curlgrep" = "" ]
then
echo "Apple Store back online"
"/Program Files/Internet Explorer/iexplore.exe" -new http://store.apple.com
exit
else
echo "Still down"
fi
sleep 30
done

Hey. I've created this in an applescript with calls to Growl to update you of the progress using the bash script above.
It can be found here:
http://www.danieltull.co.uk/files/scripts/IsAppleStoreOnline.scpt
By default it checks the US Apple Store every 30 seconds, but this can be changed by altering the theAppleStoreURL and theDelay variables at the top of the script.
One issue, if you launch it from the scripts menu, I don't know how to stop it until the store comes back online... So I hope it does eventually! Else I'm getting growled at every 30secs.

For those of you actualy hitting the refresh button manualy, try Firefox addon: ReloadEvery 2.0
It´s pretty nice, got mine set to 60 seconds. :-b

or for opera users who don't know this, simply right click on the page and select the 'reload every' option to choose the time delay between refreshes
Craig said 9:25AM on 2-12-2008
is there a safari reload every? anyone?

Strange thing, only the Stores located in the Americas (USA, Canada, Mexico) are down. Maybe a manteinance update?

Oh that's very possible. We could all just be stupidly waiting on nothing.

I think this was the case when they updated Touch and iPhone too. UK store didn't go down, but did get the same update a little later.

I have my money on Time Capsule being marked "Now Shipping" and then put on the front store page more prominently. Time Capsule was waiting on 10.5.2 I'm betting.

I'm pulling for the Apple TV upgrade. Today is, after all, exactly four weeks since the keynote.

yeah, but they wouldn't need to update the website for that. I just tried "update software" and there's nothing yet.
I don't understand why it is so hard for the Apple website to add a new product. I mean, no other website goes down when there's nothing more happening than a new product added, is there? That's a stupid remark. It's marketing. Look how anxiously we are all watching the website. There's now technical reason, it's just building suspense.
Get a life you guys! There won't be an update! Why are you all staring at that page like a bunch of zombies? It's just maintenance, nothing else. Go outside and do something! Yes but it's Tuesday. TUES-DAY.
