Rumor: iPhone 1.1.4 and iPhone SDK imminent?
If you are still waiting around for the iPhone SDK, chances are, you won't be waiting much longer. Steve Jobs said in October 2007 that the SDK would be released in February 2008; which only has about 2 weeks left! According to MacRumors, tiny-code.com, which is an online repository for Installer.app, has leaked a bit of information about iPhone firmware 1.1.4 and the iPhone SDK. According to the Tiny Code website, "Tiny Code no longer produces fixes or applications for firmware 1.1.3. We can't say much, but we are working with Apple and with their SDK for the next firmware release and SDK applications and we shouldn't be missed for long. We will no longer update our Installer.app repo for legality reasons and you should see us soon on iTunes."
Since that was posted, the website has been taken down (and strangely enough, now forwards to Apple's iPhone Developer site). Macenstein has a screenshot of the site before it was taken down. The Tiny Code developer commented on the Mac Rumors Forums saying that Apple ordered them to take down the site because they violated their NDA with Apple.

Update: According to a recent Mac Rumors forum post, Kelly, the originator of the thread on the forum (and developer of Tiny-Code), has admitted that he lied about the iPhone 1.1.4 update and SDK information. He writes, "Tiny-Code never had any relations with Apple, Inc. or any other division of Apple. Never had the new firmware or any pre-SDK pack. Certainly never signed any NDA." You can read the full post over on the Mac Rumors forum.

In the meantime, you can go to www.iphone.scenario.com. It's against the computer though and not for real money.

As someone who has played around with 1.1.4, I can tell you that it's not quite ready, so dont get excited just yet. Release 3 has some pretty big bugs in it, and i'd expect this to drop in late march rather than feb. It's a pretty major one though, and refrences new tech that is not seen in current gen iPhone hardware.
The game libs in the SDK are amazing however. We got three examples with the release, and they were very easy to play around with. Within 2 hours I had expanded the simple game of pairs to something that I plan to submit myself at some point!
I'll say this though. That ZiPhone dude will have more work to do when it does get released via iTunes.

Your reference to ZiPhone is exactly the one thing I feared I would have heard. Too bad Apple is at it again. They'd better face it and move on. It's not like many of those 400k iPhones sold in China and elsewhere would have been tied to AT&T... Moreover, "gray" iPhones represent a non negligeable percentage of the iPhones sold thus far.
Let's hope Zi or whomever comes out with a "fix" as soon as 1.1.4 hits the streets (and that Apple slows their rlease schedule even if just slightly).

iMat,
Those hacking the phone are doing so by exploiting security holes. So, Apple's choice is to either
a) leave those holes open (allowing more malicious types to use them)
b) close them, thereby irritating those that use them
You can bet that as soon as they find another software vulnerability, Apple will be up to fixing them again. It's really the only responsible option.

KeynoteKen,
I must agree with you on the security issue. But I nevertheless hope that the SDK will open more "opportunities" for unlocking the phone. I know, I know... I don't want Apple to knowingly close an eye on the whole unlock issue. But in term of sales it seems that the unlocked phones are not irrelevant (nor will they be in the future). 99% of countries are still waiting for an agreement between carriers and Apple and some might really be left out in the cold.
It is a dilemma for Apple that I don't envy them: close an eye and sell a non-negligeable amount of iPhones more or be strict and loose sales?
I am also aware Apple has agreement of revenue sharing with the carriers, but these are so little that I bet someone in Cupertino is happy users are taking initiative.
All in all I know I will not be performing something on my iPhone for which the phone has been "conceived". But I nevertheless hope Apple will leave a tiny door open (with the SDK as well) for people to legally purchase their stuff and make them money (as they did with the iTunes US store).
I own an AppleTV and I know how frustrating it is that some countries enjoy the full potential of the device, while others are stuck in a "unreached agreements, copyright issues, regional legal systems" limbo.
Security is important, but facing reality is as well. I wouldn't have bought any iPhone if it couldn't have been unlocked. And some hundred thousand people wouldn't either. Apple cannot ignore that, even though I can understand none of this (in the magnitude) was planned nor foreseeable.

If the "opportunities" you speak of are security holes, then I hope there are none of those.
"but these are so little that I bet someone in Cupertino is happy users are taking initiative"
Little in terms of percentage per phone, but the more phones they sell, the larger the subscription revenue stream over the long run. Hence, he success of the phone becomes their financial success in the immediate purchase PLUS the ongoing money flowing monthly into their coffers.

Let's just hope 1.1.4 doesn't need to be unlocked/jailbroken AGAIN.
Apple should, slowly but surely, face the reality that many people (much income) is generated via "alternative" sold phones. I am waiting an iPhone and am ready to get it to run in my country. I would hate the whole jailbreak/unlock thing to have to start again.
The iPhone is a great mobile, but I think a worldwide simultaneous release would have helped Apple more...
Just my thought

It's part of the deal with AT&T!

Then tell the independent developers to figure out a jailbreak method that doesn't rely on security exploits.
As long as the "way in" relies on vulnerabilities, expect every software release to need a new jailbreak method, every time.
Simply letting it be isn't an option--it would be an awful position to take. Do you honestly want Apple to leave open a path for the execution of arbitrary code? Sure, there are lots of fun apps to load up, but there could easily be some damaging ones, too, especially as the community grows and responsibility declines.

Is this guy a complete idiot or something? First he blatantly violates Apple's code of secrecy (and I'm sure a contract or twelve) and then he TELLS EVERYONE EXACTLY WHAT HAPPENED? The moron deserves to be sued for every bit he's worth.

sorry that this is so off topic, but we have no forum here (or do we and im blind?).
my iPod Touch just went "KABOOM" and i had to re-..whats the english word? to re-thing ;) it to 1.1.3, "clean install".
But then itunes mentioned that i have a very recent backup of my ipod touch.
It said it will do the backup, but i accidentally drew the usb cord, and now i have the backup still sitting on my HD but i know no way to force itunes to ask me to play it back on the touch :/ my wallpaper is visible when im on the front screen, but the rest is a new 1.1.3 ipod touch, without mail. So i guess if i manage to repeat that backup process and DONT plug the cord i get my jailbreaked ipod back, or at least my very important notes !

Getting to the point where I don't even care what flavour the SDK and resultant apps are... through iTunes only? Apple signed only? No free/share/nag apps? Only large dev co's?
I DONT CARE ANYMORE! The wait is driving me crazy!
At this point, if it turns out that the only way I can have legit 3rd party apps is if I personally travel to Cupertino where Schiller installs them onto my phone himself while I am made to do unclean things to his Steveness, I'd take it. And I'd say thanks!
Hurry the hell up, Apple. I'm getting impatient!
Message ends. As you were.

Mr. Integer sounds a bit fishy to me. Strange that someone would be so forward with this info in the first place, and I'm not sure Apple would leave so many clues about the next-gen iphone, even to developers at this stage.. I'd be somewhat shocked (though not completely) if they would release the next gen within a month of a size refresh. Were the early adopter price drop grumblings not enough?

And the award for dumbest developer is...
What an idiot! His reaction is unbelievable. Isn't secrecy in the top three things you'd describe Apple as?
