BusinessWeek: iPhone SDK to arrive late

In a recent BusinessWeek blog post, writer Arik Hesseldahl says he has information from one of his sources that the long awaited iPhone SDK might well be delayed. According to the source, the delay could be anywhere from one to three weeks; with February drawing to a close and no announcement yet of an Apple event, this could very well be true.

The post goes on to say that last minute preparations are being made, and that the SDK release is a complex process (which tracks with our reporting as well). BusinessWeek has generally been respectable when it comes to sussing out Apple rumors (they did, in fact, break the rumor about the iPhone SDK a day before Steve Jobs announced it back in October). However, like with most rumors, there are always a wide variety of opinions.

You are all talking about these delays and I am afraid that this is all Apple wants. This tactic of delaying shipments, or news is just a strategy to create the buzz and speculation around the program. This tend to mess around with your phsyco state and each day that comes you are more avid for SDK and other products. This gives apple time to watch the reaction of everyone and even before lauching the product prepare it with major changes proposed by us in the media and blosphere. For example the Iphone, when Steve anounced it back in 2007, was like 6 months before the release and the whole media did not stop talking about it which created a much bigger market for the iphone I believe if it could be compared lauching the iphone on the same day of the speech. Think about. Steve promissed SDK for february. There is one week yet and you are crying because you do not have it yet!

Strange - I emailed Apple about 4 days ago inquiring about the SDK and (surprisingly) got a reply:

"Thank you for contacting the Apple Developer Connection regarding the iPhone SDK.

Please know that an iPhone SDK is scheduled to be released in February 2008. We have not made any further announcements regarding this issue."

So who knows, we might still see it!

This means nothing. They are just reiterating what they have said before. Do you think they will let the cat out of the bag in an email to you?

Rather have it delayed than be like that crap Apple TV 2 update which is visibly buggy. Overall though they haven't done well at keeping on schedule. The buggy Apple TV update was late a week, and now the SDK.

I agree with most of you, there have been too many delays. I loved it when Macworld was stricken with new, new new, and "Ships today" or at least "Order Today, Ships Feb." I am really glad they gave the iPhone the 6 month hype and made the June deadline, but now it's getting old with the delays. Please throw us a bone Apple, where's our deadline driven business? I still think they put out good stuff though!

Hardly surprising... But where's the "you can buy it today" Apple that we know and love? Where's the punctuality?

C'mon Steve, you can do better than this. First you totally, completely misjudge your user base by failing to prepare an SDK for launch, and now you can't even whip one together by the time you promised. Since when is Apple known for delays, delays, and more damned delays?

The golden age of Apple is behind us, for the time being. The last good hardware release (in terms of durability and reliability) was the titanium powerbook and the last good OS was Tiger. The original iPod up through the 4th generation were great (including minis). Lately though Apple products have been suffering. The only bright spot being the Apple TV and that only because there is no consumer device quite like it - though I am aware of various solutions that approach its calm simplicity.

Apple is trying to please too many masters and Steve Jobs can't do everything which leads me to the question I always have with Apple: who has been groomed to be Jobs' successor?

Just wait until February 26th guys, we will hear something... what is it? I don't know, but we should hear something. Delay or maybe more news I doubt we are going to see an Apple event now, it's too late, they would have announced it today at the latest.
