Jailbreak from iTunes
Guess what's come out of the pumpkin patch news service this time? A video that shows hackers using iTunes to restore an already-jailbroken and activated 1.1.4. The iPhone software bundle (the ipsw file) has been pre-hacked and updates through iTunes to a fully hacked system. Like other hack previews, this one is not yet ready for prime-time. The developers put this together as a proof-of-concept, but hey'll likely be releasing this method when the actual SDK comes out.
Congratulations again to Pumpkin, roxfan, Turbo, wizdaz, bgm, np101137 and the iPhone dev team.

Geez I've been waiting for this a long time... A hacked ipsw is the way to go. BTW I know the song used on the video is from Dream Theater, anyone care to tell its name?

Dream Theater, haha... you burnout. :)

It's on their new album. That's the only one I'm really not familiar with.

It is the first track of their new album - "In the Presence of Enemies - Part I."
And burnout? What?

That is pretty slick but I have to wonder about 2 things. Video quality was pretty poor and after the first shot of the firmware, the phone was completely removed from the screen and then re-appeared. How do we know the iphone wasn't swapped out with a different one. Also, couldn't help but notice the video didn't show the baseband being used.

if we had nothing to release, we wouldn't release a faked video of it :) we have a reputation to keep up here ;)
but seriously, we were just deeply wounded by the response to our previous video, where people said it was too long (the reason we didn't cut it that time was because we were afraid of people calling BS) so we cut this a little. Also, try watching the vid on the iphone. It was shot on an HD cam, but youtube downsamples it badly for its main site. The wifi version on the iphone should be better. Omitting an actual phone call wasn't intentional. We just didn't think of proving that it works, because it's simply a normal restore with some voodoo thrown in.
Anyway, all doubts should be put to rest when we release the full instructions and some tools in the next few days.

Unfortunately, wouldn't Apple's just patch iTunes to do a crc/md5 type check on the firmware file before attempting the restore so that only official firmware files are allowed?

How rude of you to inject reality into this fantasy!

using itunes to jailbreak is just one of many side-effects of the basic idea

What I'd like to know is; will an iPod Touch with the iPhone apps, lóse those apps if you hack it? I bought the iPhone apps but want more, but I don't know if they'll simply be deleted, or if I have to buy them again if I ever decide to re-legalise my iPod Touch :)

If this is a custom bootloader, is it better to be on BL4.6 or BL3.9 or does it matter? I'm guessing that the tools will allow you to be on either bootloader when it comes time to upload the custom one.

"For ye of little faith who didn't like our previous video, here's a video of us restoring to a jailbroken and activated 1.1.4. Why use custom tools, when you can do it straight from Apple's pretty interface?"
thats what i like....no barriers...nothing can stop us...im happy we get to do this to Apple and At&t. If it was up to them, they'd probably charge every time you turn your iPhone on!
i buy a song and to make a ringtone i have to buy it again..!!?? Whats up with that?

This is a FAKE.
Let me tell you how it works:
The bootloader is patched on the iphone not to check for signatures.
They did it using an exploit I FOUND and unfortunately told them when I still spoke to that bunch of people.
So that's why itunes accepts unsigned data.
I can give you the sources of that thing.
And anyhow it's completely USELESS.
Namaste!

Don't you have a cult to mislead somewhere? Zebra if you try just a little harder you can be bigger than David Koresh or the Freemen or Marshall Applewhite all rolled into one. Strive to be #1.
Oh and your broken, copied and pasted typo ridden code blows chunks too.
Don't be mad at this awesome new exploit, just because you can't explain it yourself....
