Woz talks Apple again
Steve Wozniak is in Australia this week to speak at the Broadband and Beyond Conference. He's also sat down with The Sydney Morning Herald to discuss, among other things, his disappointment with the iPhone:"To tell you the truth I was really disappointed when the iPhone was introduced ... half the phones in the AT&T store at the time were 3G phones ... I was shocked because Apple is bringing the full internet [to mobiles] ... and it's not 3G."
Woz isn't alone in this complaint. Since the iPhone is the first mobile phone I've ever owned (I know - crazy), my only experience is with EDGE. Of course it isn't as fast as broadband in my house, but it isn't unusably slow, either.
The iPhone is scheduled to debut in Australia later this year (not that it isn't there already).
Thanks, Asher!

Woz comes across as an Apple bashing punk. I don't regard his opinion as having any worth

I thought I was late getting a mobile phone, but 2007 is VERY late... Way to go!
March 03 2008 at 3:34 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyWoz is just pathetic at this point. What amazes me is that people continue to listen to him. When the only things you make the news for are trash-talking your old partner and who you are dating, it's time to start saying 'no' to interview requests.
And press: please stop asking to talk to this guy. He's the worst kind of dinosaur, the ones that won't shut up.
You know, Woz is a genius and great guy and all, but does he honestly think that Jobs would release the iPhone and not put in 3G just because he didn't feel like it? There was clearly an issue, whether it be battery life, size, or whatever, and the dev teams at Apple decided to go with EDGE first time around for a reason. Big deal. They still got millions of people to buy it, and millions more to want it. Steve is a businessman, and by leaving out a feature that most users find to be "key," he ensured that Apple will sell millions of SECOND generation iPhones as well.
March 03 2008 at 2:02 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyHi
It's been my experience that you can always spot the current 3G mobile folks.
They are the ones standing near the wall outlets :-)
Seriously though, I went to a Conf last Nov and everybody there I knew who had a 3G phone, was plugged in. My usual nightly dock in the cradle was all my iPhone needed.
That, and IMO, AT&T still has a ways to go, in their 3G coverage. I know many places that are not within AT&T's 3G coverage map.
Cheers

If it is true about the battery life then I'd trade a faster data connection for a longer battery life on my phone.
March 03 2008 at 1:34 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down Replyyou mean you prefer battery life over faster internet? If so, me too. If I have to pick the lesser of two evils, I'll take the slower internet, and be able to surf it all damn day. It's slow enough to notice, but it's not slow enough to matter.
March 03 2008 at 1:38 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI had a microsloth 3g phone, and it would sometimes not even last the day with an overnight charge! I can't say that entirely due to the 3g, but that really sucked.
I'm certain the iphone battery is much smaller than the one that thing had.
Oh, I'm sorry- thought it was Dvorak talking....you'd think they were the same person...
"I don't understand why it would be a battery issue - I get as much life on my 3G phones as I get on my non-3G phones."
Erm, that's a load of crap. Everybody knows 3G phones suck for battery life. I've never had a 3G phone with a decent battery life (and I've had the Nokia E65, N95 (current), Sony Ericssno K850, K750i, K600, K700, etc.)- none have ever had good battery life. Woz is full of it. I don't blame Apple for leaving it out, but am happy to wait for them to include the new 3G chipset with better battery life and power usage (plus smaller), when it comes out in Aus sometime this year...
