16 13-year-old Max has been working on his YouTube download utility for, well, a very long time. He's been plugging away at it over on the IRC channels wheedling experienced programmers into donating their time and energy to help it become real. And now, with a insanely big assist by iPhone developer Pumpkin, it has.
The software is available from Installer.app and you can read more about it at Max's site. Congratulations Max and Pumpkin and everyone else who chipped in on the project.

This is pretty great. For now it seems to be the only way to use YouTube on my jailbroken 1.1.3 iPhone. A few glitches and crashes, but works pretty reliably. Bravo!

I like this application a lot. The only thing is missing is viewing the video before you download it, but the solution is as easy as pressing the home button and touching YouTube. Great job!

wtf, thanks 1password for autosubmitting.
Anyway, yeah, and it seems like this 13 year old did 0 programming, just begged others for help?

@tom: i don't have much of a problem with the situation as a whole. i think its neat that a kid with an idea got someone/some people/whatever interested in it and made.
i just don't like pumpkin's personality, he's rude, abrasive, and self-righteous to the nth degree. and getting name-dropped on tuaw isn't going to help that.

Someone with limited technical knowledge getting a bunch of other people to do their work while getting the attention -- sound familiar, Erica?
The best part are all the comments, "Aside from the crashing and instability, this app is awesome!"
It's amazing that this is not treated as anything more than a kid's hobby... however, I've yet to see an iphone "hakker" exercise any sort of logic, caution, or reason to protect their phone, contracts, or data so install away!!
Oh wait. His site is down... oops.

I was the one who said, "great app except for the crashes". I suppose that denigrates the art of solid programming, but my point was: for a first release of an application that's provided free to me and utilizes an unsanctioned workaround on a platform that doesn't yet support 3rd party applications, I'm pretty pleased with the stability and the functionality and willing to forgive a few glitches. Start charging me and I'll start complaining about shoddy coding.

ars_workerbee: are you referring to that incident in ##iphone on freenode? because I'm not sure what else could've given you such a low opinion of me.

Absolutely! It's not like the 16g iPhones are hurting from limited memory space =P

Thanks for chiming in DrunknBass, something needed to be said by one of parties involved to get Max some credit around here.
Its very unfortunate to always find a group of posts that slam the programming capabilities of others here, given the fact those slamming haven't contributed anything to the community besides being a consumer.
Its quite the norm here on Tuaw, especially in the comments sections of Erica's posts, and as such I can appreciate when active Community members step forward.

Maybe the fact that Erica has built a pretty strong tradition of trashy/flashy articles and irresponsible community encouragement is the reason her posts in particular generate such negative responses... ya think?
Sure, give the kid credit for learning and doing, but the idea of what seems to be a massive amount of non-techie tuaw iphone readers with no regard for privacy or security jumping to install something a 13 year old wrote is just sloppy.

fantastic app. wish my iphone was 80gigs :P !
however, i noticed that once i left a video downloading, and my phone auto-locked at its usual preset interval, and the download vanished (atleast thats what it looks like) - doesnt this app keep running in the background? I mean, do you have to set auto-lock to NEVER to be able to use it?

Pumpkin:
Hats off one more time, you're definitely one heck of an awesome coder.

Good god, your comments are ridiculous, Max has worked his tail off for the past few *months* trying to get a reliable, native way for us to download youtube videos directly onto our iPhones, and his app is *awesome*.
For the morons taking shots at Erica and pumpkin, I suggest you stop using any of the apps/tools they've written/contributed to - oh wait, then you're back to a stock iPhone with no 3rd party apps - and also, while you're at it, stop reading any of the news being posted here because really, what's the point, you seem to have everything you need as it is, why bother?
