Found Footage: MXTube

16 13-year-old Max has been working on his YouTube download utility for, well, a very long time. He's been plugging away at it over on the IRC channels wheedling experienced programmers into donating their time and energy to help it become real. And now, with a insanely big assist by iPhone developer Pumpkin, it has.

The software is available from Installer.app and you can read more about it at Max's site. Congratulations Max and Pumpkin and everyone else who chipped in on the project.

Just to clear it all up, I am the only one to even touch MxTube's source code. Many people have helped me work around problems with the source, but the only one to contribute actual code made for MxTube was pumpkin. Many have given code examples but pumpkin made the hack to get auth keys which is used in all search requests. I am responsible for building everything else including the interface and download functions.

Max

PS: I am currently in the process of moving to a new host for mxweas.com. The site will come in and out for the next day or so.

Just one question though... On which partition does it store the videos?

I personally have ZERO programming skills, so would never be able to contribute on that level. So no matter what age or how much help one gets I appreciate the time they take to develop these apps. It works great on my phone and thanks

Very impressive guys. It's very easy to use and works as advertised. I wish the same could be said of SwirlyMMS. I'll give it time though.

I haven't got it to crash yet. Maybe it's because I wait for the YouTube video to finish downloading. Thanks to Pumpkin and Max for the work. I don't know if Pumpkin is a narcissistic person or not, but he is one hell of a coder. IF this were for sale, I would actually buy it 'cause I have a use for it.

hah thanks. I like to think I'm not all those sweet things ars_workerbee said I was, but who knows. :) I'd ask around before building an opinion, though.

The videos are stored in /private/var/mobile/Media/MxTube as Mp4 files. And if for some reason it crashes while downloading, you can go into this directory and delete and .filepart files. I had a couple 35 meg files in there just taking up space.

Good god, your comments are ridiculous, Max has worked his tail off for the past few *months* trying to get a reliable, native way for us to download youtube videos directly onto our iPhones, and his app is *awesome*.

For the morons taking shots at Erica and pumpkin, I suggest you stop using any of the apps/tools they've written/contributed to - oh wait, then you're back to a stock iPhone with no 3rd party apps - and also, while you're at it, stop reading any of the news being posted here because really, what's the point, you seem to have everything you need as it is, why bother?

I just don't get why you people waste the time to complain about other comments. Take your own advice and choose not to read them.

Some of these articles unfortunately need a shot in the arm of reality and common sense.

Does this actually download the videos to your iPhone/iPod touch? Or does it only allow you to view it when connected to wifi? I am just making sure before I download this app. It looks very interesting and useful.
