You're on a trip. You want to order in pizza. What's the easiest way to do this on your iPhone? Open up Maps and tap the "locate me button" at the bottom-left corner of your screen. Wait for Google Maps to find you and then type "Pizza" into the search box and tap Search. Maps automatically searches near the "locate me" results--finding all the pizza delivery services near your actual location. Tap on any blue "disclose" button to find the phone, home page, and address for each item.
Of course, you're not limited to pizza. Search for shoe repair or pediatricians or any other retail type or service.

It's obvious we're antsy for tomorrow's announcements...people are posting comments about the iPhone that are unrelated to the articles themselves.
Daniel, I agree.
I'm hoping we see something interesting tomorrow. Anything other than, "here's what we hope to see".
I love my iPhone, and I want to see it get better. It has so much potential, and it bothers me to see it limited so much.
To qualify this post for the article, yes, Google Maps location feature is great. I've used it a lot!

What is it with the mundane stories today? Does someone have a posting quota to hit?

Exactly.
I almost expect the next TUAW crack journalistic expose to be titled:
"iPhone 101: How To Power On Your iPhone"
LOL!!

Let's start a thread soon so that we can get some stuff off our minds about tomorrows roadmap announcements. We're feverish, here.

I've had hit and miss success with the local food search. If I type in mexican near me it will miss quite a few locations. It's better than nothing though.
I'm impressed at the "Find me" feature of the phone. It's pretty close most of the time.
MMS for the iPhone will have to come from Apple. From the way it sends the messages now it looks like something will have to be flipped on AT&T's side for the msgs to pass through properly. We still get messages to goto some stupid web page with info that's to hard to remember.
This seems like something that should have been on the phone from day 1, but I'm not holding my breath.

I find that it gets different results when, for example, you type 'chinese' or 'chinese food'. Also, it doesn't find very many of the places I know or that are popular. 'Sushi' only finds about five places in the entire Houston area and there are five of them right here at the nearest intersection that don't show up. I assume it is because the management has failed to submit their information to Google or whatever they need to do to get on there. Oddly enough, I can find some of those places if I search for them directly by name. At any rate, it doesn't work as good as I'd like, but it's probably good for finding something when you're out of town.

I used this feature recently to find a place to get my car oil changed.
I literally typed the word "oil" into the search field and several businesses showed up in my area. I clicked the closest business and tapped the phone number to call and see what the wait time was.
LOVE it

I've used google maps on the iphone a few times, but there's a really glaring problem.
Let's say I want to know how far "Target, Ann Arbor, MI" is from "Starbucks, Ann Arbor, MI"
Well, shoot, I can't do that unless I know the address for both. I can't just search for one thing in the directions box, then search for another, then hit "Directions!"
No, I have to type in the address for both locations.
What if I don't know the address? That's what I'm using Google Maps for!!
Copy and paste would partially solve this problem.

You don't need to know the address. Search or pan/zoom to Ann Arbor and get it in view. Then do a new search for "target" or "starbucks". It will drop pins on the ones closest to the middle of the map.

I do this all the time when I'm out of town. Search for the first place (the hotel i'm staying at) and bookmark it. Now search for the second place, choose directions to there and use the little bookmark button to chose the first saved location. Or I think you can even just go to recents if you don't want to bookmark it. Hope this helps

Does anyone have a magic solution for finding food? "food", "restaurant", "grill" don't work well unless they are in the name.

I don't really use this. As Johnny said, you can get different results for similar phrases. When I test this in my local area, the iPhone often doesn't list places that I consider to be "good". If I don't think it's good for my local area, how can I trust it for an unfamiliar one?
I'd use it if I was desperate, but that's about it.

What I like to do, is to go to http://m.qype.co.uk , type the name of the street and a search term, like "food". Then in the results there is a "show on google maps" link that opens the iPhone maps application.
