For those expecting a low-level bit-by-byte account of what the SDK means, Erica will return momentarily after a break from her (epic)
type-a-thon this afternoon to give you the low-down. While we all wait for our downloads of the SDK to start here at TUAW's globe-spanning offices, let's just recap on what you need to build your next, earth shattering, application for the iPhone and iPod touch:
- Mac OS X Leopard
- An Intel-based Mac (sorry, PowerPC folks -- this one's an Intel-only show)
- Xcode
- a free Apple iPhone developer account and the SDK itself -- note that access to the SDK is not going to cost you ninety-nine bucks. It's free, though getting the application approved and out onto devices will set you back the $99.
Sadly, if you're wanting to run off and pick up a copy of said SDK, you're likely to be left wanting.
Apple Developer Connection is 'pulling a
Twitter' (much like Twitter itself did, during the event) and is totally unresponsive to most visitors. That said, when the ADC site comes back online, be sure to scroll to the bottom of
this page to get in on the SDK (note, existing ADC members need to update their memberships too and sign up as iPhone developers to access the SDK).

Was able to grab it before they went down. 2.1 gig. Finishing up the install now. All the documentation videos come in through iTunes as movies.

Anyone able to post the iTunes links? SDK downloading now, would be nice to watch the doc videos while it's chugging.

Hey - Is it possible for you to upload the SDK for me and the others who can't access ADC at the moment?

Hum...
How about corporate applications ?? If I want to give my sales team an app to check on their sales goals or customer information do I need to post that internal app to iTunes ??
Okay I could still the web app route but such a distribution scheme rules out private corporate applications that could run on an iPhone.
Thoughts ??

There's a checkbox for 'Internal (Enterprise) Applications' as your development target. So I assume they have a solution for this.

Got this from AppleInsider
2:40: App Store will be international, but Apple is also working on a version that will allow corporations to distribute apps in a secure manner to their employees.

Was there any mention of how freeware or open source apps would be handled?

my only gripe with the whole announcement is the charge for ipod touch users
it's not the charge so much as the fact it isn't available for countries which don't have an itunes store. i wanted to buy the last batch of apps but couldn't.
i reckon apple should develop their new app store for mac sw too and maybe they could somehow make sw update system available to 3rd parties like the new iphone sw will be.

Can someone post a direct link or maybe create a torrent if it doesn't break the license agreement.

Well, the real question about the Virtual iPhone is:
Can you jailbreak it?

I don't know if I'd call this all I need to know. I mean, no where in this post is any information about when the App Store will go online, which is probably the most important bit of information, in my opinion.

So, um, can you write and run your own apps for free, or not?

As far as I understood. You can write them for free, test them for free in the emulator and as long as they are free you can publish them on the store for free.
If you want to charge for them you have to pay a very reasonable 99$. I say reasonable because I expect this is a one-time digital signature and I don't have to pay for every app of every X updates I make to the app.
It does sound pretty good so far.

@Jacques
Are you sure about this? The way Steve Jobs said it made it sound like that. but all the blogs are saying otherwise.

No, you've got the wrong idea, this blog entry is embarrassingly inaccurate and is misleading tons of people.
It's $99 to enroll into the iPhone developers program and this registration doesn't expire (at least it doesn't say this anywhere).
That's it, there's absolutely no other charges! The reason Jobs says "no fees" for free programs is because he just finished explaining that they needed to take 30% of profits to pay for hosting your program and didn't want us to conclude that free programs would be penalized.

Anyone know how this will work with unlocked/jailbroken iPhone users? I assume that if they still have access to the iTMS, they're golden, but my iPhone is still as it came, and don't know...
