Phil Schiller: Apple rumormonger

Phil Schiller isn't only Apple's Senior Vice President of Worldwide Product Marketing it would seem he is also a fan of Apple rumors. If you watch the video of today's event it is plain as day on his calendar (served up to his iPhone via ActiveSync): 2pm: Brainstorm new Apple rumors. Oh, Phil, you scamp!

Was there any mention on a new calendar application other than exchange support? this version looks slightly different. it looks like it might support multiple calendars. there are 2 + buttons. top and bottom right. I may have just totally missed mention of this fact during the live blog.

Yep, you can hook the Calendar app up to sync with as many accounts as you want. Only one Exchange account, but you can have one Exchange, one iCal, etc.

They did say it will support multiple cals

Even if this isn't a joke, it would be very funny and clever if Apple DID actually start off most of those rumors to build hype :P
Although, surely, they don't want people being disappointed either so it's unlikely.

I actually was thinking about that during the event. There were a lot of last-minute rumors about the SDK being more limited and less far along etc. and my feeling was that the actual announcements were way above the many pessimistic expectations. It made me wonder if any of the negative rumors were planted....

I still think its dumb that Apple says there will be a nominal charge for Fireware 2.0 for Touch users.
OK, I understand the charge for the JSU, that included 5 new apps. But Fireware 2.0 is just giving us ACCESS to the Apps Store! Why does their accounting require a charge for that? Seems a little unfair.
OK Steve Jobs, you're not looking to make a profit on this charge. Then give it to us for $1.

Unfortunately there are federal regulations that require charging for upgrades for products that aren't accounted for on a subscription basis like the iPhone and AppleTV are (which is why the updates for them are free). It's certainly possible it might be a buck or two, though...the 802.11n upgrade was only $1.99. And I don't think Apple really makes much money on these upgrade fees anyway when you factor in cost of developing the software, bandwidth for distributing it, etc.

As was recently pointed out, even with the cheapest AT&T monthly plan, total ownership costs on an iPhone are around $2000. That's significantly more than a measly iPod Touch.
I agree that Apple didn't make it clear last time around - explaining WHY Touch users had to pay would have worked wonders. But the facts are facts - our government created this bizarre laws in a misguided effort to protect us, so if you want things changed, look up your local representation.

Another thing to consider is that the 2.0 release may not be limited to enabling third party applications. It may very well include a lot of other useful things, similar in quantity to the previous five applications.

Bryan, my advice is to sell your Touch and use the proceeds to buy some duct tape for the cardboard box you obviously live in.

It's firmware, not fireware. My first reaction was to read that as Firewire, which was quite puzzling ("FireWire 2.0? What FireWire 2.0, and what does FireWire have too do with the iPhone?").

Oh, Phil, you're such a card!

Surely the aspect so far ignored is that the software update is coming in late June, the end of the 2nd quarter. Installing apps from the APp store is going to need some bandwidth.... perhaps a 3G iphone might arrive around the same time?

I totally thought that too as soon as the word June came outta SJ's mouth.
I'm betting not only a v2.0 iPhone software, but a v2.0 iPhone hardware as well in late June.
All the more reason to buy a whole new phone instead of just doing the free upgrade. :)

true, and as much as i'd love a 3g iphone, (i currently have a 1.1.4 jb one) i have no problems downloading apps from installer on EDGE.
even the slightly larger ones at 5MB (like the bsd subsystem)
i imagine some games (like that spore) might be heavy duty, but i cant think of these apps being larger than the ones we currently see on installer....correct me if im wrong...
