The iPhone App Store

Today, Steve Jobs announced the App Store to go along with all of the SDK fun that's soon to begin. Available in the iPhone 2.0 software update, the App Store will allow for easy navigation of both paid and free apps; Featured, Just Added, Staff Favorites, Most Popular ... it's basically an iPhone version of Apple Downloads. You'll be able to search, tap and download applications wirelessly to your iPhone (and iPod touch for a nominal fee) via WiFi or cellular. You'll also be able to install apps via iTunes.

Developers will be able to sell their apps in the App Store, and can set their own price. They'll receive a monthly payment of 70% of sales, with 30% going to Apple for their credit card, hosting and marketing services. There are no additional costs for listing apps, after the $99 setup fee.

Quite predictably excluded from listing in the App Store are pornography and malicious applications. I have absolutely no witty comment to make about that. It's common sense.

This is a good idea that way you don't have to jailbreak you iPod/iPhone to get 3rd party apps and you dont have to void your warranty and risk breaking your device

That might be very good for some developers and uesrs that wish the 'full' features of 'desktop app'... however, if you just want to use the browser there are vast amount of amazing apps. out there.
facebook.com, iphone.caradvisorynetwork.com and other did very nice job...

My first app will be to make a folding@home client for my 8GB iPhone. Think of all the unused clock cycles while it sits in my pocket all day.

As a former developer, $30 sounds reasonable to me, especially considering Apple handles everything. Companies like Kagi.com can really rape you with their fees. Don't forget that the fees collected help to offset the cost of hosting all of the free apps, of which I'm sure there will be many.

Are we sure that when they said nominal fee for the Ipod Touch users they just meant that the apps would cost money? I have a touch, and I personally don't care if I have to pay a few dollars for an update, but I really can't wait. Does anyone know when the app store will be open for us to purchase apps?

Will the App Store be part of the update for iPod Touch? I can understand all the Enterprise stuff, but charging people to allow them to buy & download software seems a bit off!

And you know this how? No one thought there would be free apps either.
