New icons for iTunes and Calculator on the iPhone 2.0

We did catch this during our liveblog of the SDK talk on Thursday, but just in case you hadn't seen them yet, it seems both the iTunes WiFi store and the calculator will be getting new icons in the iPhone's 2.0 patch. Of course, the App Store will apparently have its own icon as well, and we would assume, at this point, that each app will be able to take its own place on the home screen.

But while the Calculator icon change is kind of a strange one (does this mean the Calc buttons will also be square?), the iTunes change definitely makes sense. That will be the place to download music, while the App Store will be the place to download everything else.

Where's the percentage sign on the calculator?

This is so basic.

I think Apple changed the calculator icon out of embarrasment because they are looking too much a like "BRAUN" original Calculator (1960). lol (-;

Maybe the Calculator change was to get away from their original inspiration for the look, the Braun calculator: http://www.core77.com/blog/technology/iphone_calculator_a_tribute_to_braun_classic_course_it_is_6929.asp

If you look closely through the whole interface you'll see that you use an "x" button to close stuff (ie safari pages) and maybe a "+" to add more stuff and so on. On the cal you will find the "x" to suggest multiply, "+" meaning addition, as it should be.
I would reckon the change is related to a much deeper attention towards the interface and the icons used. to prevent misunderstandings or simply coherence, it's simpler to make the symbolic calculator icons square.

Changing the downloads icon makes complete sense if you also think of an icon with a movie frame on it :)

"we would assume, at this point, that each app will be able to take its own place on the home screen."

Uhh...what would make you think that? The fact that people with jailbroken iphones have been adding new apps to their home screens (and moving them around) for months?

Seriously, I noticed at some point that you all started blogging as if the functionalities introduced by jailbreaking just didn't exist, as if Apple had infected your brains with some sort of cease and desist letter or something. I for one, am not looking forward to the SDK. Whoo, I get the chance to pay for stuff that I have been using for free for months! Yay!

And to the guy who wants a scientific calculator....jailbreak--> installer.app--> what do we have here? A Scientific Calc App!!

I think one of the other reasons they changed it is that they moved the icon too. The old arrow was pointing to the iPod as if to say download to your iPod. Now that it's moved the arrow doesn't make much sense!

Well, since you can rearrange the icons to your liking now, I don't think exact icon placement is much of a design consideration. At least, not any more.

What is more, the arrow only pointed to iPod in iPhone. In iPod it never did.

What, like the one that's there already? Is there something wrong with the existing icon? (I know it's there, I'm looking at mine right now)

Oh, and it's "an", not "a".

I like the older WiFi store button better, because the new icon doesn't really imply that you can download stuff from it.

Maybe you can't?

I liked the one that was introduced in 1.1.1 better, those square buttons look very very weird and almost too ugly...can't understand why they have changed the icon, and just that icon so many times!!!
