iBooter offers iTunes-free iPhone diagnostics

iPhone hacker Niacin has just released his version of iBooter. Running on Mac, Windows and Linux, iBooter offers an interactive diagnostic and customization tool that talks directly with Apple's iPhone bootloader. With it you can set environmental variables, write a custom picture to the display (faboo if you're tired of that USB plug and the iTunes logo), run USB commands and diagnose why, for example, your iPhone isn't booting correctly.

Full installation instructions are available at the iBooter website as well as downloads for all three platforms. If you need to send commands directly to the baseband, iBooter is the tool you've been looking for.

Erica, thanks for developing excellent apps. Can you pls modify VoiceNotes so that it can be used on 1.1.1?

I use iphone in India. When I save a google map location, it gets saved as "latitude, longitude United States". Due to 'United States' in the end, maps cannot open. I have to manually delete the U.S. and leave only lat.,long. for maps to open correctly. You help could be immense.

Firefox downloaded it fine, and as soon as I installed the libs and put my phone in recovery mode, it worked fine. I was able to change the background image from black to blue.

I don't know how to change the iTunes icon though... do I have to SSH the file onto the phone (/pwned.png) before applying it?

Right click the link, "download linked file". Once it's downloaded, Get Info on the file and remove the file extension. After that open up terminal and navigate to the directory with the file in it and "chmod +x ibootermac", obviously without the quotes. After that just execute it from the terminal like you would a normal command line app.

Not that easy, 16 gig ipod touch will not go back from 1.1.4.
Tried Win/Mac every way. Gives errors every time.

The touch is extremely easy. Try reading the instructions. The only firmware you can't load is 1.0.2.

The phone is the harder one, since you have the whole baseband/sim unlock mess to deal with.
