Are these the first screenshots of the iPhone AppStore?
One of our readers sent us in some screenshots of his iPhone showing what appears to be the anticipated iTunes AppStore. Could these pictures be the AppStore, or could it be some type of hack? It definitely looks legit to us! He says that after opening and closing the AppStore a couple of times and getting an "iTunes connection" error, it finally loaded some random AppStore pages. We also got word from modmyifone.com that they got the same tip we did and are featuring the screenshots as well. That's two votes for legitimacy...

Thanks Aaron

They did. It's called Pwnage Project. Confirmed to be working with firmware 2.0.

Ahh maybe ZiPhone for unlocking, as it is confirmed to work too.

the number of reviews makes this seem a little fishy to me.

Indeed. I thought the same thing. I feel like I should call "Shenanigans" or something.

Look at the top result for JouleData Solutions (listed as the creator of the Checkers application:

Looks like a conglomeration of hacked iPhone apps to me. Even if they were doing SDK development, they wouldn't be on the pre-rollout store along with Facebook.

agreed with Luke James...thats a ton of reviews for something that hasn't been released to public yet.

I smell Photoshop...

Rather feels like Photoshop to me. Seems that if Apple was going to do an App store in this style, they'd use a standard(ish) NSCell, while these are obviously quite customized(coloration, mainly). Granted, Apple can deviate significantly from their own designs(case in point: Aperture 2), but this doesn't look like a style they'd take.

Excuse me, UITableViewCell (still not thinking in Cocoa Touch yet :P)

You know it probably will work and look something very similar to this. It could even be that the Apple designers haven't finished yet and they have thrown up a couple of 'placeholder' things for testing but...
I have two problems with the screenshots that make me feel like calling 'shenannigins'. My first thought is, why is a Facebook app (web/social category) appearing next to a Checkers game (game/entertainment category). You would think that the difference between the two would mean they appear in different categories (like the other screenshot has). Then, I ask, shouldn't there be a price tag on there somewhere? Or a tag that at least says 'free'.
But, I'm pretty sure that this is sort of it...but you are seeing a work in progress with a couple of 'placeholder' apps just thrown up there for testing.

Oh wait...it says top 50. Doh.
Ok...but I still call this a slight work in progress so some things will change Im sure.

Well, we did see a large bit of the App Store during the special event. I don't think this is anything to shout W00t! about...

Wow, so all I have to do to get a made-up story more cred is submit it to multiple sites?
The logical fallacies that occur on a routine basis surrounding Apple and rumors amaze me, and only go to show how far bloggers really are from being real journalists.
