When iPhones fall
Onto cement
Sparrows cry
And angels weep
The voice of Jobs
thunders
"Drop it not!"
Although the phone
Still appears to work,
(Albeit oddly reversed)
Oh no.

Probably a PhotoBooth pic, that's why it's bass-ackwards

Or it was simply taken in a mirror with the iPhone. ;-)

(smacks self in head) well Not with the iPhone (wrong side) but a mirror nevertheless - or photobooth (good choice Dane!)

Hmmm...I recall something about MacBook's with iSight cameras and PhotoBooth application taking pictures in mirror image by default. To not have that happen, you have to go to the Edit Menu and select Auto Flip (Shift Command F).
That is the most likely explanation for this mirror image picture. Whoever took the pic by holding the camera up to their laptop's iSight camera and snapped it with PhotoBooth has not enabled autoflip yet.
Why are we soooo quick to assume a scam when there's an easy explanation for what we see. If the glass is all that's cracked, no reason to expect that the phone wouldn't turn on and at least display the home screen, though getting it to interact would seem a stretch.

I feel your pain Erica. I did the same thing to my 8GB model. At least it gave me an excuse to buy a new 16GB model. I keep telling myself I needed the extra space as I play with the SDK......

Did that to my 8GB. Shattered screen, but the touch function works flawlessly.

@kristen:
At $249 for that "used" display from your link (check the fine print at the bottom), you'd be just as well if, imo, picking up a refurb unit! At least with an Apple/AT&T refurb you've got a professional fix and full testing on the thing before it's back on the shelves. Weren't refurbs going for just about that amount a week or two ago?

That is an awfully steep price considering Apple will do the repair for between $199 and $299 (depending on the model).

I friend of mine's iPhone looks about like that, it sometimes has trouble locking but works great otherwise.

I took the pic with Photo Booth, didn't think about it being mirrored. I put tape over the broken glass and it still works. Gonna do this later: http://www.intomobile.com/2007/09/18/dude-fixes-his-iphones-broken-glass-screen-by-himself-the-ghetto-broken-display-fix-method.html
then buy the 3G hopefully!

Ah, you've confirmed my post above about it being a photobooth issue.
FYI - Patrick Norton showed how to replace an iPod or iPhone's glass screen back when he was on DL.TV. Quite a while back. Probably an iPod, when I think about it, but it might be helpful if you search it out.

I dropped my iphone on gravel in July, just 3 weeks after getting it on opening day. The glass cracked in the corner. I have put a screen protector over it and it still works perfectly despite 3 cracks running all the way across the screen.
I am waiting for that 3G iPhone....

This actually raises a much more annoying issue that many griped about in the early days of the iPhone, but you don't hear about any more:
WHY CAN'T I GET DAMAGE/LOSS INSURANCE ON MY iPHONE?
I'm not talking about extended warranty from Apple Care. I'm talking about I pay $6/mo and if I drop the thing, I get a new one. We can argue whether it's worth the cost or not, but it's an option that every other cell phone or PDA/Smartphone I've owned had offered to me.
Why is the iPhone so special in this regard? Does AT&T assume it's more breakable than my Treo was? Or is there an assumption that iPhone owners are more likely to scam a new phone?
Dumb.

You can get insurance through your regular insurance company (renter's or homeowner's policy). For 20 something dollars a YEAR, I have full coverage for any and all risk, full replacement value, no deductible for my phone. MUCH better than the cell providers' insurance (which is real close to a scam)

/*----- Alright Doubters [VIDEO] ------*/
here's a video of me using it:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SIyWh0OovCI
I couldn't figure out how to "un-mirror" photo booth for videos, sorry.
In the demo I updated my facebook status to "is making a video" it's too blurry to read.

One next week's episode of 'How NOT to Pimp your iPhone...'
Seriously, that's cool. I mean, obviously it sucks to have broken it; OTOH, the fact that it works at all is amazing, and in a way it's neat to have something that looks like that but still works. It's kind of like a hard-core mod. "Ah, you engraved a rose on your phone? Neat. Hey, check mine out..."
