HTML5 Client Side Database Storage + iPhone = ???

Will the next iPhone firmware release support client-side database storage? That's what TUAW reader Jorge believes. Way back in October, we saw the HTML5 standard promising client-side persistence for Webkit-based browsers. Jorge apparently ran a client-side SQL check on the new Simulator-based Safari and found that it ran properly. Of course, simulator tests do not mean actual 1.2/2.0 implementation and we have no way of verifying whether this functionality extends to the actual iPhone firmware.

If you try the following page on the iphone:

http://webkit.org/misc/DatabaseExample.html

Create a few notes, then go to the settings menu you'll see in Safari a new section called Database!

Cool!

Next step for Google: no need to install google gear, simply use a web browser compatible with HTML 5. After Gmail, Google docs is already available offline

Yeah, this feature was confirmed long ago on iTunes with the "iPhone SDK for Web Developers" video. Along with a client-side databases, there will also be full-screen web apps (no chrome), new CSS3 features, SVG support, and better Javascript support.

The video "iPhone SDK for Web Developers" at http://developer.apple.com/iphone/ covers numerous new features in Safari to be released with the 1.2 update.
