Update: yeah, it was a joke. Bummer!OK, confession time, without a shadow of a doubt, Mortal Kombat/Mortal Kombat II is one of my favorite video games of all time. I don't really want to admit how much of 6th grade was wasted playing the SNES version of MK II.
TRMK.org is reporting that a port of Mortal Kombat is being developed by Midway for the iPhone and iPod Touch. Apparently Ed Boon (Mortal Kombat co-creator) posted coded message on his site, spelling out TOUCH. TRMK says that a source revealed to them that a Touch version IS in the works and was also able to provide a very, very convincing video demo.
The demo shows what looks to be motion controlled movements for the characters and the animations and actions looked pretty realistic to simply be pre-recorded (though I'm not ruling that out). From the characters in the Demo, it appears that this port is either of Mortal Kombat Trilogy or perhaps a new edition altogether.
Keep in mind that today is April 1 and that this could all be a hoax/joke. Mortal Kombat was one of (if not the first) fighting games to feature hidden characters and other Easter eggs ("Toasty!" and Noob Saibot anyone?), so this could all just be a really good prank. Still, the potential to see Mortal Kombat on an iPod Touch or iPhone is pretty exciting -- at least to a old skool gamer geek like myself. What about you? Would you play a 2-D platform fighting game on your iPhone or iPod Touch?
Thanks Luke!

This is nice, but what ever happened to the dudes that were making MAME for the iPhone? I would MUCH rather have that. Can we please get someone on it? I'll donate money to the cause.

Actually, only MK1 faced that scrutiny. In MK2, you could choose what you wanted to do with that.
Fuck yeah Christina, good taste, MK2 for SNES was one of the best arcade ports I had/have ever seen.

As RP said, only MK one had that bit of awfulness (and in fairness, you had to enter in a blood code on the Genesis version) -- MK2 was brilliant, brilliant port, especially considering it was to a 16-bit processor.
But the "sweat" - good times! Good times.

April 1st! I mean, how I'm gonna do my combos and fatalities with no keys?

The keys are in the corner of the screen, and block is done by touching anywhere. Something like Fatalities could be done with Gestures like they did on the Wii MK game.

Right now I doubt this is real especially considering what day it is. But even if it is I doubt controlling the characters via motion control like that would make it nearly as easy to control as with a gamepad or fighting joystick. With the latter being my preferred method to control fighting games such as this. This is especially true if you are trying to do a combo move that starts with the character jumping diagonally and then you have to double tap a direction and then press a button to do a special move. Then imagine the moves where you have to hold down a button, do a tapping motion on a movement and then press a button. To be honest, playing it on MAME on a Mac (especially with the right control) is a lot better.. hell, even playing one of the many console versions or on the Nintendo DS would be better.

Oh and by the way, Ed Boon... the co-creator of the series isn't above pulling pranks every now and then.
BTW, I'm not begrudging anyone the choice if they want to try something like this out if\when it comes out.

Sorry Christina, it was in fact an April Fools Day joke. But glad you, like myself, would love to see this game on the iPhone platform. Here's a bit of the behind the scenes on the story and how I built the game prototype for the joke.
