Survey finds most iPhone owners aren't Mac users

Rubicon Consulting recently published a survey (PDF) from a selected group of 460 iPhone owners. Here is a summary of the results:
  • 80% of iPhone owners said they were "satisfied" with the device
  • 72% of users said they use the iPhone at least once a day for e-mail
  • 55% of those surveyed said that the iPhone has increased their mobile browsing
  • Almost half of the owners changed their carrier
  • 40% of those that switched, switched from a smartphone device
  • 1/3 of iPhone owners carry 2 phones
  • 13% of iPhone owners surveyed have unlocked iPhones
  • 1 out of 10 users reported "hand pain" after use
  • 1 out of 5 iPhones were purchased as a gift
Only 20% of the users surveyed said that they had both an iPod and Mac; while only 5% said they had had a Mac and no iPod. Half of iPhone owners are under 30 years of age and students took up 16% of iPhone usage. While not surprising, the most desired new feature is applications and Exchange support. iPhone owners are of course paying more for their monthly phone bill -- the average phone bill before iPhone purchase was around $78/mo. and after purchase was around $97/mo.

No. Wrong. iPhone runs on OS X, not Mac OS X. Not the same thing.

I switched from T-Mobile DASH to iPhone (Unlocked 1.1.4 and ZiPhone is the software that unlocks it) I got the iPhone after a month it was launched, activated it on Pay-as-you-go account, then waited for the unlock methods. since then I am on iPhone.

By profession and as a Hobby, I am the Software Architect, you can check out my iPhone Pic (running on T-Mobile) at http://www.Flickr.com/mudassirazeemi

The number 1 use is email? Is this really just an Apple iPhone feature? If you switched from a standard cell phone to a smart/media phone that could do email and really liked this feature then yes I could see the number 1 use would be email be it from a Blackberry (we all know someone that is addicted to Blackberry email), Windows Mobile, Apple, Android, Symbian, Palm, Brew, etc...

Then again this survey is suppose to support the popularity of the iPhone and not the usefulness of smart/media phone in general. As most of these questions could be asked in general in the use of these types of phones.

I don't understand how part of this makes sense. 40% of respondents switched from a smartphone. That means 60% didn't, so they didn't have a smartphone (at least for some significant amount of time) before buying the iPhone. So this 60% probably have increased their mobile browsing. Yet according to this survey, there is at least a mysterious 5% of the sample that used mobile browsing more before they had a smartphone. Is the Razr browser that much better than mobile safari?

"1 out of 10 users reported "hand pain" after use"

How???? I cant figure out a single way that it hurts after/ while I hold it.

1 out of 10 users probably hold the iPhone upside down too.... idiots

I still don't see the argument of the iPhone being a more expensive plan. Maybe it is if you didn't have a smartphone before with a data plan. I pay $20 less per month than I did with my BlackJack.

Well if you are a grown up person that supports their self and is NOT on a family plan. You have to pay "big boy" prices without mommy's help.

$80 to $100 seems to be the norm for people with their own plans. I however, have managed to get it down to 66 bucks a month because I just cut out a bunch of features I don't use all the time and have a small amount of text messages.

I know I don't fit the demographics. I'm over 50 and I've already owned the 8g iPhone and then the 16g. I also have a 60gb video iPod. I have to use 2 phones a sprint Treo 700wx for my job. I'm waiting to dump the Treo as soon as the new Exchange feature is launched.

"Almost half had changed their carrier, but only 13% had unlocked their iPhone"?
Does that mean "Almost half changed to AT&T so they could legally use their iPhone"?
