AT&T's Mobility CEO "spills the beans" on iPhone 3G

Gizmodo posted on an interesting topic that came up during a lunch with AT&T's Mobility CEO, Ralph de la Vega, regarding the iPhone and 3G support. He said that AT&T expected to have all of the smartphones on their network integrated with 3G. PC Mag's Sascha Segan asked whether or not this would include iPhones, that's when Vega said, "Let me repeat what I said: I think that you're going to see our integrated devices be 3G devices in the not-too-distant future, and I mean months. That should be clear enough."

Looks like all of the recent rumors of 3G iPhones could be real after all. If you have been thinking about buying an iPhone, it might be worth it to hold-off on a purchase.

that would be great. However, if i use t-mobile sim card which i guess doesn't support 3G, would i have to get a new 3G t-mobile sim card, which i also think t-mobile doesn't have right now?!

Ok guys, some of you haven't been reading all the posts. The reason for iPhone getting free updates and not the Touch is an accounting one. The iPhone is accounted for as a subscription based earning. Therefore, its updates and such have no impact. But the Touch is not sold as a subscription model, and therefore when new software is released, it is essential changing the value of a product already sold. I believe its Sarbane-Oxley Act, but I'm not 100% certain that's the right one. I do know for a fact this has been explained here on TUAW before.

I really don't understand why everyone keeps referring to a 3G iPhone as a "rumor."

Steve Jobs said that there would be a 3G iPhone "sometime next year" before Christmas. When it comes straight from the horses mouth, it ceases to be a "rumor."

i'm glad you get it. i'm reading all about the 3G "rumor" on all the Mac sites, and i'm like, well DUH! the rumor shouldn't be "if," it should be "when"...

It's going to be very frustrating for anyone holding an original iPhone to sit on the sidelines in the post iPhone 2.0 era. All you will read about is iPhone II. Apple wins with those people trading up. 3G coverage is another issue, but not for Europe and Asia which is the real opportunity still open to Apple.

Being an "early adopter" (after the original price drop) of the 8GB iPhone, I look forward to the 2.0 update but I have a question and maybe someone could answer it. Can the current iPhones on edge be upgraded via a firmware update to use the 3G network? I read somewhere that the 3G takes more battery power, etc. but do the current iphones already have the required hardware? Maybe it's just wishful thinking but Mr. Vega's comment "our integrated devices (will) be 3G devices in the not-too-distant future" is pretty open-ended...could that mean ALL devices will be upgraded to 3G? I have the family plan with AT&T and the two other phones are tiny little samsungs, with tiny little batteries and they both "run" on the 3G network. Seems possible that a firmware update (2.0 maybe??) could contain an upgrade enabling the faster network. Again maybe just wishful thinking...anybody know if this is even possible?

No, it requires a different chipset. Absolutely no way to upgrade, sorry.
