Yep, iPwnage was released today by the iPhone Dev Team, allowing the installation and loading of arbitrary firmware onto the iPhone and iPod touch. Great, but what does that buy you? Let's take a few minutes to chat with iPwnage developers Pytey, NerveGas and more to get a sense of the possibilities and promise of iPwnage.
If you'd like to replay the chat below, click the 'replay' button. Note that (ironically) the CoverItLive widget does not work on MobileSafari.

Please use a Flash program that does not have the sound on by default. I come to TUAW to read up on news, and all of a sudden the page starts making irritating clicking noises. It's almost as bad as those Flash advertisements with sound.

PCheese -- you can turn the sound off within CoverItLive but unfortunately we don't have a 'global' mute. P.S. It's actually not done with Flash, or so they say.

tuaw is not the right place for a liveblog with a iphone hacking team. you should create an iphone hacking blog/website for posts.

God, stop whining. There's a simple mute button, it's an Apple weblog and if there was a Mac OSX team (which the iPhone Dev Team essentially is) would it be inappropriate to hold a chat? Sick of you whiny internet bitches.

3.9 is inside the software bootloader downgrade kit (google it).
4.6 is around but I can't remember where I got it right now.

I did the pwnage today and it works great.
I just had a little issue with Syncing but after creating a new profile in itunes for my iPhone, it works perfect.
btw, running 2.0 on vodafone.de

I have two iPhones (one earmarked for OS 2.0 as soon as apple decides I'm worthy of a dev certificate). I tried out the iPwner program on the dev phone earlier today and it worked great. That phone has no cell service, but its now a fully jailbroken 1.1.4 iPod Touch (essentially).
I then tried to iPwn my main iPhone (on a standard AT&T contract) and was able to get the software to upgrade just fine, but my AT&T service didn't come back once the process was finished. I finally ended up restoring back to the stock 1.1.4 ipsw on that phone because I need to be able to make calls with it.
I think that the problem was just that whatever iTunes usually does to reactivate a phone after an upgrade wasn't happening, so my cell service didn't get turned back on (presumably because the pwned ipsw is already activated when it installs). Has anyone else see this behavior and/or know how to "force" iTunes to reactivate a phone even if it thinks the phone is already active?

I had the same problem activating my AT&T service. This is what worked for me:
When you create the custom IPSW file with 1.1.4, check the extra boxes for "Enable Baseband update" as well as "Neuter Bootloader" and "Unlock Baseband". You can find the bootloader files from the link listed above. Update the phone with your new custom IPSW 1.1.4 file.
Once it's updated, restore with your custom IPSW 1.2 file. AT&T service should be back.

Erica,
Why did you pick an app to record a chat about iPhone that doesn't work on the iPhone? I can't scroll down!

I can't say I'm interested in running 2.0 until the June launch day, personally, but I AM interested in other possibilities. Can anyone speak to whether or not iPwnage will allow the loading of custom kernel modules? I know core was working on that for a while and ran into some apparently unbeatable roadblocks.

So this may be an obvious question:
Being that an ipsw is just a renamed zip file could I put any mobile OS in a zip file? Or use it to install another OS?
In other words: Can I / will I ever get android or windows mobile on the phone?
NOTE: I would never actually use WinMo (I have to use it right now :( ) but it'd be an interesting test to see some other stuff about the iphone / touch hardware.

I don't see how Windows Mobile would ever be compatible from a hardware standpoint.
I don't doubt that someone could figure a way to get Android running on it though.

1. What happened to the multi-colored apple logo? I suspect they can't legally supply it - but I still want it. As petty as it sounds I really don't want the Pineapple or the steve toon on my phone. Is that what "Use Custom Pictures: option is about? Until there is a version that makes it easy to add my own custom pictures will that option allow me to use the original apple logo?
Wow I sound like a newbie. I know this is bigger than the icons. Certainly. But I'm hesitant because I don't fully understand how it works and how to put it back if I need to take my phone back to apple. (I have twice already.) In the past I just do a system restore and they're none the wiser about my apps.
2. It looks like you're supposed to do iPwner first, then use IPSW Builder to patch 1.1.4, then use iTunes to restore the phone with the patched 1.1.4? So iPwner preps the phone so it can accept the patched ipsw?
Anyone seen a video walkthrough/how to that ISN'T blurry (like the engadget one)?
