Engadget posted about some information they received from the
ZiPhone folks. According to ZiPhone, they have spotted some code in the new iPhone 2.0 beta software that suggests Apple will use the Infineon 3G chipset. The code mentions "SGOLD3," which is a series of chips that Infineon produces. iPhone currently uses the S-GOLD2 EDGE chipset.
S-GOLD3H, also known as "PMB8878," supports 7.2Mbps HSDPA and has built-in acceleration and media playback features (which, incidentally, the iPhone already has and does well). This chip also includes a higher resolution camera, 5 mega-pixels instead of a 2. Engadget notes that the processor speed stays the same.

I'm sure I speak for everyone when I say, I hope it actually utilizes the 5MP cap.
That would be nice.

I disagree. 5mb from a camera phone lense is not going to be very good, and will gobble up precious memory very quickly.

Is there any information available, what the differences in power-consumption between SGOLD2 and SGOLD3 are? Would be interesting to know!

With some digging around the web, I located the actual manufacture page for the board.
It seems that it's not just a chip, but an entire 3G Cell Board. Very interesting.

The datasheet states "3 MPixel camera interface" not 5.

The fact-sheet of the 8878 is actually:
http://www.infineon.com/cms/en/product/findProductTypeByName.html?query=8878
After thinking of it - it's propably not enough to find the power-consumption of the chip alone. I guess there is additional power-consumption by the antenna-amplifiers as well....

By the way, a question I have to ask is that are there any chipsets that support T-Mobile's upcoming flavor of 3G using the 1700Mhz frequency? If not, then I'm probably going to have to jump ship to AT&T, even though TMo is WAY cheaper for what I need.

Looking at the manufactureres website, the SGOLD3 is only EDGE, where as the SGOLD3H is 3G. And it clearly states in ZiPhone's discovery that it is the SGOLD3 and not SGOLD3H
Failed discovery.

I am desperately hoping that this is all a hoax.
A 4G processor is on the way!!....... imagine that!
I suppose hot spots will do the trick, instead...

Knee-jerk comment: um, you must mean "camera processor"
Refined edit: How much of the "camera" isn't on this chip...just lens+CMOS sensor?
