1Password: same great taste, new price

Password concierge and form-filler extraordinaire 1Password was upped to version 2.5.12 today with more features, changes and fixes than we could possibly list. Of course, current bleeding-edge users probably noticed that 2.6 Beta 6 also came out today with its own improvements and fixes, including the missing Fluid extension from Beta 5. Did we mention it supports Fluid these days?

Version 2.5.12 packs Safari 3.1 support, iPhone bookmarklet changes, better Firefox support and a plethora of fixes. While the price of this TUAW favorite has gone up a whole $5, so has the functionality. The current update is free for license holders, newcomers get it for $34.95. To each their own, but I personally consider this one worth every penny.

Update: I'm quite obviously a month behind on my 1Password release notes. 2.6 Beta 6 did come out today, 2.5.12 came out... yes, a month ago. I apologize to anyone who was thrown into a time-warp due to my careless disregard of basic chronology.

I got an email today stating it was the author's birthday. They took 40% off the price. I got 1Password for 19.99. I think thats a bargain and I highly recommend the product. I use Roboform for Windows so this is a great replacement.

Thats cool and answers my question. But I cant let myself accept my passwords are out there somewhere even with their security and confidentiality assurances. Especially when we are talking about bank accounts and whatnot. Difficult to make that leap.

You're going to have risks even if you remember your passwords and type them in at a public terminal, because someone could be keylogging or have a trojan on that computer, etc. If you want to keep your bank password in your head and put your TUAW password online, nobody is saying you can't do that, either.

Oh, and my.1password.com was news to me. It's still invite-only. So we're back to whether this will help you remember your passwords and use longer (and more secure) ones when you're at your computer, or not.

BTW, they sent me an email, today only it's $20, for the dev's birthday: http://agilewebsolutions.com/promo/daves_birthday?d=DavesBDay2008Email

This looks cool, but what happens when you need to log onto something and you are away from your own computer? You wont be able to remember your passwords because pswd1 has been doing it for you.

That's where my.1password.com comes into play. It's what makes 1P so brilliant.

Isn't this the same update that you wrote about on 19 March?

I waited for a while to install it after getting it in a Heist, but it's awesome. I love the password auto-generation on top of all the rest.

I recently found 1Password, and ended up buying is almost solely because of the iPhone compatibility feature. SplashID was really the last thing I still missed from my prior palm device, and have found 1P to be a very good replacement for it.

I've since come to really appreciate 1P's other features.

I was fortunate enough to get 1Password for free in last November's MacGems giveaway and will definitely be paying for the upgrade whenever the free updates run out.

First sample's always free, as they say.

I tried it when it was free, and I still didn't see any value in it. It doesn't seem to do anything that can't be done within Safari or Firefox anyway, but it adds another program running in the background to accomplish it.

Maybe I'm missing something, but I just don't have that much need for a separate program for password management. The keychain works fine on its own.

1Password is the best application in its class and certainly worth the price of admission for many.

With applications such as iLife and iWork retailing for $79, I personally can't justify spending $35 for password management. I will just stick to inferior Firefox and/or Mac OS X's built-in keychain/password.
