Nike+ coming to iPhone and iPod touch

Stuff also reports that in addition to bringing along the sensor system, the new Nike+ system may also be able to take advantage of the iPhone's and touch's wifi by sending stats from the sensor directly to Nike's online database, where a new "Coach" system will help you schedule runs and activities.
Sounds pretty amazing. Of course, this is only the beginning of the kind of "life management" software that we'll see coming out of the SDK. Stuff suggests that your iPhone will help you know when go to out and for how long, but of course we know that by the time June comes around it'll be able to do a lot more than that.

It would be great if this could hook up to a heart rate monitor also.

This would be fantastic if it would slowly slew the music BPM to match my pace. Then I could set it to a desired rate and it could shuffle songs that are nearly the right speed. Even better, if I'm lagging it can lead slightly to encourage me to go a little faster. Might be more than an ipod could manage, but maybe a touch or an iphone.

Will they add support for old adapters in the new firmware? Probably now one knows this nd probably it will only work with new adapters.
Nike+ is a disposable product anyway..

Even though they are Flash-based, I don't think the iPhone and iPod Touch have the right Form-Factor for a Sports MP3 Player. They'd need a Tactile Remote Control, similar to the Apple FM Remote or the BlueEye; a Touchscreen would be too clunky when your running.
If you can use a touchscreen while running, you've either superhuman dexterity or aren't running fast enough...

You're missing the point: You don't need to touch the screen that much if you're concentrated on your run! On the nano, you only hit one button!! The biggest feature I want is the logging and stuff, without having to shell $149 for a nano when I already have an 80Gb iPod + 8Gb iPhone!!
And if they make it like the iPod interface (double-hit home button) it'd be perfect! 2 clicks and a menu would show up with the option to play powersong, etc... Easy and completely unlike what you tried to describe! :)

No, I think you may be missing _his_ point. Using a touchscreen at all while running is very very clunky. The benefit of using a nano (or any tactile-control iPod) is that you can operate the thing without looking at it. That's especially important when the unit is in a sportband on your arm.
I've owned a 2G nano with the nike+ kit and loved it. Have since moved to an iPod touch and, while I love the additional functionality it affords me (and look forward to trying the nike kit with it), it is simply not optimal for running. Things that should be simple, like skipping a track or adjusting the volume require _looking_ at the device, which is too much time.
Now if they manage to somehow work the their wristband wireless control, I would totally get on board.

I agree with all of you but with the iphone they could just make it where you click the mic three times to go to your power song. I mean it can already pause/play songs and even skip to a new song. They could do the same thing with the touch just without the mic built into it.

I've logged 3,500 miles with my iPod nano and Nike+ kit. I also own an iPod touch, but there's no way that I'd ever want to work out with the touch in my pocket. The nano is perfect for this kit, the touch (or iPhone) too big and fragile.

I'd really like to see some sort of heart rate monitoring added to Nike+.
I've been a big fan of Nike+ since it came out. (I even bought a pair of nike shoes for the first time.) However I'd really prefer not to have to use my HRM when I run as well.
Wouldn't be that hard to implement. Have Nike+ come up with a chest monitor (or have an attachment that can pick up the signal the way exercise machines do), and you wouldn't need a watch with a display -- Lance could give you reports of your pace, heart rate, etc.

Interestingly, Nike just announced the Nike+ SportBand (http://nikeplus.nike.com/nikeplus/?promoID=uscrmABP_NPA_07Apr08&l=products,gear) -- it does all the distance and speed tracking without requiring an iPod at all.

While I use my Nano and such while I run, I always have my iPhone with me, and I don't always listen to music. It would make things much easier if I could just use the thing with my iPhone. Also, that thing is always in your shoes, so why not use it as a pedometer and track stuff the entire day. Hopefully Apple can find a way to not have to have that little dongle sticking out, with the WiFi and Bluetooth built in, I mean, come on. I wouldn't mind plugging in my shoes at night to charge. :-)

Nahh! I prefer the iPod Nano for my workout. The iPhone/iPod Touch is to big and uncomfortable for running.
But I like the idea, and i expect some new features to come. Maybe a direct upload from the iPhone/iPod Touch to nikeplus.com?
