O2 offers iPhone savings for UK buyers
On the heels of T-Mobile's discounting of the 8GB iPhone, the UK carrier O2 is also cutting prices on the lower-capacity model by a full £100, dropping the base price of the handheld (with plan) to 169 pounds -- deal good through June 1.More portents of 3G iPhones on the way? Or just a clearing of slow-moving stock on the entry level phone? Either way, if you're a Brit with a yearning for an iPhone, the cost of entry just got lowered.
Thanks to everyone who sent this in.

So, doesn't that beg the question: What happens on or soon after June 1st?

You guys realize that 169 pounds is 333$ so it is now cheaper to buy an iphone in the UK than the United States.

I am a Brit with a yearning for an iPhone. I won't be buying this though as:
1) I am a bit suspicious that they could be clearing inventory, although the price is still the same at the Apple store.
2) I have promised myself (and it is hard to keep this promise) that I will replace my current iPod 5G at the same time and get one device that does both. I have about 35 GB of music though so I will have to wait for the eventual 64 GB version. I hope I can still resist temptation when the app store comes out....

You could be waiting for a good few years for a 64GB iPhone comes out.

Why do people really need to carry ALL 35GB of music? Oy, quit being greedy and selfish. Learn to compromise.

I'm guessing about a 12-18-month wait but it could be less than this as companies are ramping up production for SSDs. Intel plans to introduce a 160 GB version by the end of the year and Samsung plans a 128 GB version.
connorcam said 1:21PM on 4-16-2008
And do you know the size of these SSDs?
We have 1TB drives now, but you don't see them in iPods.
Let's say iPhone capacity doubles every year. It might be 2010 before they have one that size.
Jon said 1:28PM on 4-16-2008
The SSDs are available in 2.5 and 1.8 inch versions. Read more:
http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/08/03/10/intel_tech_could_take_macbook_air_ssds_to_160gb_next_quarter.html
And I said I was expecting 12-18 months and as it is April, that would be almost 2010, yes.

It's "O2" not "02".

Or are they going to force you to sign a contract before getting the discount? Maybe they are just trying to get people to sign up rather than jailbreak, apple aren't offering the discount!

OK just a point here as i went to buy on for my Dad.
Apple Stores are NOT reducing their price. They are taking your details down and then O2 will give you £100 credit off of your account ( like i'm going to take out a contract on a phone now )
So i went to Carphone Warehouse & O2 Store in Liverpool Street ( London ) . Both are sold out of iPhones.
I'd be peeved if i signed an 18 month contract on this phone now as you know it's being replaced. Why not offer the older smaller phone on a 12 month plan rather than rip off customers ?

Does anyone know if you have to sign a contract there and then to get the discount, like T-mobile, or is it the same as it always has been, ie. walk in and take it home?

also if you go to www.quidco.com/o2 you can get a further £100 making the phone £69, however with this method you do need to sign up for a contract.. the £169 price is the price and it's not a forced sign-up.

Got mine this morning. It's awesome. Used ziPhone (which messed up a little, fixed in the end though.) to unlock and jailbreak it so now I'm using my O2 pay as you go sim. Unfortunately, apps are having problems installing. But that doesn't really bother me.

One question for current iphone on att owners, so obviously an update is coming soon, I've put up with some features missing on my iPhone by keeping my blackberry on Tmobile now finally I can end my contract with tmobile and my friend wanted to get an iphone and I offered my 8gb to him and I was planning to use my att sim on my blackberry. Anyone familiar with switching plans around (I'm not)...if a new iPhone does come out I'm sure I'll be tempted to get it, u think I'll be able to switch back? I think so but I'm not sure. Anyone know?
...sorry its so long.

UK buyers can also slash ANOTHER £100 off the o2 price via Quidco until 21st April --- you can get £100 cashback tracked meaning you can buy the 8gb for just £69. See here for details: http://www.quidco.com/blog/?p=161

What all the sites who have posted this seem to be overlooking is that the 16gb version is still the same price so maybe the 16gb is selling better and O2 are simply trying to shift some excess stock.
