O2 offers iPhone savings for UK buyers

On the heels of T-Mobile's discounting of the 8GB iPhone, the UK carrier O2 is also cutting prices on the lower-capacity model by a full £100, dropping the base price of the handheld (with plan) to 169 pounds -- deal good through June 1.

More portents of 3G iPhones on the way? Or just a clearing of slow-moving stock on the entry level phone? Either way, if you're a Brit with a yearning for an iPhone, the cost of entry just got lowered.

Thanks to everyone who sent this in.

I would certainly be owing an iPhone if the contract was cheaper. Unlocking is an option but I don't fancy bricking a £279 gadget.

Yes it's up to you to sign up for the contract yourself once you get home. Check out this discussion thread:

Am wondering about this as well. Do I understand correctly that if you just buy the phone and don't activate it through iTunes, you haven't signed up to a contract?

Then just jailbreak, unlock and off you go.

What all the sites who have posted this seem to be overlooking is that the 16gb version is still the same price so maybe the 16gb is selling better and O2 are simply trying to shift some excess stock.

UK buyers can also slash ANOTHER £100 off the o2 price via Quidco until 21st April --- you can get £100 cashback tracked meaning you can buy the 8gb for just £69. See here for details: http://www.quidco.com/blog/?p=161

One question for current iphone on att owners, so obviously an update is coming soon, I've put up with some features missing on my iPhone by keeping my blackberry on Tmobile now finally I can end my contract with tmobile and my friend wanted to get an iphone and I offered my 8gb to him and I was planning to use my att sim on my blackberry. Anyone familiar with switching plans around (I'm not)...if a new iPhone does come out I'm sure I'll be tempted to get it, u think I'll be able to switch back? I think so but I'm not sure. Anyone know?

...sorry its so long.

Got mine this morning. It's awesome. Used ziPhone (which messed up a little, fixed in the end though.) to unlock and jailbreak it so now I'm using my O2 pay as you go sim. Unfortunately, apps are having problems installing. But that doesn't really bother me.
