iPhone video recorder with audio support debuts

Aaron Besson of MyTriniPhone posted this morning about a new iPhone video recorder. Unlike previous entries into this realm, this updated version from DreamCatcher records both sound and video.

I download a copy and gave it a try. The interface is a little on the prototype side but it recorded without a hitch. I was able to copy the resulting mp4 video onto my Mac and play it back. It was grainy (as expected, given the low quality of the iPhone camera) but the audio was clear. Playback on the iPhone itself simply did not work for me.

Apparently this code is based on ffmpeg and there's a lively little discussion about this over at the Hackint0sh forums, if you care to check that out. You must pay to register if you'd like to record more than 30 seconds at a time or if you simply like the program and want to support the developer. Deets are in the program. Just tap Settings > About > Buynow.

be careful re-naming any of the video files through the app interface. If you remove the .mp4 suffix the file "disappears" from view from the apps point of view. The file is still there (in the media folder) but inaccessible.

It is also problematic that the developer is charging for software that is not built on the official SDK, so there is no guarantee that it will function with the next software update.

I wonder if Apple's gimped APIs will still work after this has been written for the full set of APIs.

Oh well. It's not like I won't still jailbreak anyway.

Looks cool - too bad it crashed non-stop on encode for me. I couldn't get it play back a single one. Actually I couldn't get it to save changes to the settings at all either (tried turning the auto-encoding off)... weirdness.

Great app, I bought it and plan on using it for when I don't have a video capture device handy.

It's too bad.. iPhone software (hacked) is going the way of Palm software. At first there was so much good free stuff, now programmers are diluting their apps unless money is paid. Freedoommmmm!

libavcodec is licensed with the LGPL, it is enough for the developer to simply point users at the ffmpeg project site. Releasing HIS gui code is absolutely not required, it is legal to link lgpl libraries into proprietary apps.

It's legal to *use* lgpl libraries in proprietary apps. It is not legal to link them in such that they form a single binary, as this app does.

Shame on TUAW for beating around the bush on this point:

The developer of this app used several GPL libraries and is apparently failing to distribute the source of his derivative work. The problem is not so much that he is charging for the a time limit removal but that he is freely distributing binaries of other peoples work without source. Without a doubt, all of the incredibly hard heavy lifting that is going on in this app is the work of the libavcodec and ffmpeg developers.

Please do not give this guy any money until this problem is resolved!

Erica,

Playback on the iPhone worked for me, but with some shortcuts:

After you press "Playback" the screen simply goes black. Then you tap on the scren after one or two seconds. After that, the screen shows up the iPhone video controls (Pause, Rewind, Forward, Progress bar, Done, etc.) and shortly the video itself begins to play.

Weird but it works...

The first one? Did ShowTime not support audio? Because I already paid for ShowTime!
