Muxo adds soft subtitle support for iPhone

Over on the Handbrake forums a contributor has released an interesting tool called Muxo that allows adding soft subtitles to MP4 that are supported on the iPhone. Soft subtitles are those that can be turned on and off, rather than being actually encoded into the video with tools we've mentioned before like Submerge and RoadMovie. Entropic designed Muxo as an accessory to Handbrake, allowing you to add SRT subtitles to a fresh DVD rip. Once you load them on your iPhone you'll get a menu button that lets you turn the subtitles on and off.
Muxio is a free download here (download link).
Thanks Matam!

Great app!!! Congratulations on your work Entropic! I've posted about Muxo at iPhoneHellas.gr with a full tutorial (Thanks to Matam) in english... Keep up the good work!

Once again congratulations on your work!
Glad that people like Muxo.
Feel free to visit http://muxo.entropicgarden.com to leave bug reports, feature requests or just to say hi.
I think (not verified) this is just a utilization of an industry standard: 3GPP Timed Text.
iPhone player has TT support built-in, and Muxo now create mp4 files that contain TT tracks.
Thanks TUAW for a heads up on this,
Love the concept, but is there anyway to view the subtitles that have been added to the mp4 from iTunes or quicktime?
If you change the file extension to .m4v they should work fine in quicktime/itunes. :D

April 28 2008 at 1:38 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyThat subtitle button is Apple's, not Muxo's, right? iPhone has had subtitle support since the last update, just no one has implemented it til now.
April 28 2008 at 11:51 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down Replyyup, exactly. Apple use it, as said before, but no tool was avaible to all. It's implemented in the iPhone, at least on FW 1.1.3 (can't tell for other firmware revision). Muxo just add the subtitle stream in the file that the iphone video player understand
April 28 2008 at 1:37 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down Replyis there any url where I can read more about it, sounds realy intresting. how to put the subtitle on my device?
April 28 2008 at 9:21 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down Replyi have some more screenshot on my website (but it's written in french) that show a littl' more on how to use it. Still, as the application is *very* new, it's almost there's no official guide or so. But, that's quite easy to use. To give you an example, i was using a .avi as movie, and a .srt that i knew was in sync. First, i had transcoded the movie to a .mp4 file (for the iPhone). Then, i used Muxo to add the .srt as a subtitle track to the mp4 file. Finaly, i added the movie to iTunes, and sync' with the iPhone. Then, the "special button" appear when you play the movie on your iPhone.
April 28 2008 at 10:06 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyHey, that is a nice feature. I wonder if the subtitle size can be adjusted. :D
April 28 2008 at 9:13 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down Replyhaven't seen the option anywhere while i was testing ;) still, it's not that big, it's just the ... right size :D (sorry 'bout the screenshot, but, there was some video playing, but it wasn't displayed on the picture... (remembering the ol'day when trying to take a screenshot of the DVD player ...)
Still, it's damn ... pleasant :D you can add not only one, but some subtitle, and then, while clicking the button in the red circle, you just have to choose wich one to display :) nicely done. Sadly, the option to activate and choose the subtitle only appear in vlc, and on the iPhone, but not on iTunes or QuickTime Player... 'maybe on the next update ... :D
Some of the movies on iTunes now feature closed captioning, but it's nice to be able to do it ourselves. Sweet.
