It's official: iPhones in Canada
According to The Star, Canadian communications firm Rogers Wireless has finally announced plans to carry the iPhone. "We're thrilled to announce that we have a deal with Apple to bring the
iPhone to Canada later this year," they said in a statement. "We can't tell you any more about it right now, but stay tuned."
This comes after nearly a year of back-and-forth between the two companies and the Canadian public. In April of last year, Rogers made a point of telling CBC News Online that they had not reached an agreement to carry the iPhone. At the time, they were the only GSM carrier in the country (all others used he CDMA standard). So no Rogers meant no iPhone.
Then, an article in The National Post suggested that Rogers would price the iPhone out of the hands of most Canadians, comparing it to their "Right Fit" plan, which offered (as of July '07) 250 anytime, zero weekends, 25MB of data and an additional fee for texts for a whopping Canadian $97/mo.
That was speculation, of course, and today's cryptic message from Rogers doesn't offer any contradictory details. However, the brief announcement should make many Canadians happy.
Thanks to everyone who sent this in!

FYI the picture is of Mr. Rogers (from PBS) not Ted Rogers (from Canada)

April 29 2008 at 4:37 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI can't wait - but i can. I am scared my first bill will be like $20,000, like the people on youtube. I would probably get the highest plan to start so i might not go overboard, then tone it down
April 29 2008 at 4:28 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyDoesn't every Canadian who wants an iPhone already have one by now? I was sure that everyone just unlocked theirs and used it anyway.
I'm going to defend Rogers and their current data plans.
At the moment, I pay $80 for 500 MB of data per month on my unlocked iPhone. I feel that is a fair price, but can understand why others may want the price to be lower still.
By the time you add on my voice plan (Couples and Family Plan), I am paying $110 a month for a 1/2GB of data (I never max it out) ...
Keep in mind, this change is relatively recent. Until December 2007, I was paying $100 for 100MB of data.
I, too, wasn't happy with that price structure, but $80 for 500MB, I can live with that ...
Keep in mind that Canada doesn't have the same population base that the US does, and it is a much larger country to cover for wireless service, and that cost has to be borne by all wireless customers.
Maybe it is time to be happy that the iPhone is coming to Canada officially, and stop grousing about old data plan prices.
Sign me a satisfied Rogers customer ... (did you hear that, Uncle Ted?)
At least you can have a phone. Those of us who live in North Dakota and Montana cannot have the phone because there is no AT&T service here. Maybe I should move to Canada. Is there a market for a slightly used, elderly anesthesiologist anywhere?

I have an unlocked phone now, but no data plan, only wi-fi as Rogers data plans are terrible as everyone knows.
I'm thinking that Rogers has to find some middle ground in terms of pricing for the phone and data as there are already lots of people in Canada that have iPhones. So they won't get the early adapter if they price it high. If in fact they release the 3G iPhone, then there might be some who would sign up, but again if someone wants 3G, they potentially will use lots of data and the price has to fit
Why is everyone all convinced at yet ANOTHER snippit from YET ANOTHER news source? We've been getting these since the iPhone was announced back in January 07.
There has NEVER been any official word from Rogers themselves... its always been 'well, this person from Rogers said this to this independent website'
Sorry, but until I see something on rogers.com about it, I'm not going to believe it.
Visual Voicemail has been working there for a LONG time... glad to see that it will be official now!
April 29 2008 at 12:52 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyFinally. I wonder if Rogers will do anything about all the people with unlocked phones. I'm sure they'd like to have them officially on some kind of data plan so they could suck more money out of us, rather than us not use data at all (or only over wifi)
Also, I have to say. I just witness the most obnoxious Intel ad ever. It blacked out the entire screen and wouldn't let me see anything at all or even close the ad until the video finished. That's terrible.
